It's that time.  Time to start developing the next home page show.  Ceramics and 3-d art are well in my view screen, but I'd like to do a contemporary art show first.  artdc.org contemporary picks or something like that.  No limitation by medium.  This will be a contemporary art show.

The theme is: artdc.org contemporary art: reawakening

Reawakening in the sense of a new beginning of the art it self, the process, or more literal as the season of spring.
It's acceptable to post your thoughts about the meaning of contemporary art and the relationship of particular works with reawakening.

Let's search for impact and interesting works, this isn't just about color, let's look for emotions.  Let's search for interesting surfaces and more.  Let's talk about it and see what we develop.  Remember, it's paramount that these images work together to create  a cohesive show.

If this is your first time posting to help curate a show please read the instructions on how to reply here:
http://artdc.org/forum/index.php?topic=8046.0
All the requested info must be included for your selections to be considered.  Thanks so much!

Here are some images that I'd like to show, what comes to mind when you look at these?

I'm a fan of the bird based images, maybe it's a popular icon to use in contemporary art, but I like it.  It expresses a freedom, either having it, or wanting it.  Antoinette tends to use birds on a wire which to me contradicts the sense of freedom.  Stuck, not knowing where to go, wanting to fly, but looking for somewhere safe to land.

Nice solid abstract that I've stared at a long time.  The photo of it makes me want to see it in person.  A fascination with rothko, but dark.

The imperfect series is wonderful. It's very difficult to pick which one I like the best.  Great texture, energy, I can see the pain the characters are feeling, or maybe that's my projection looking at my own faults.  Maybe they are happy in their faults, and the torment is in my eye.

This series is special.  It fits my main requirement for art.  I can keep looking at it, and each time, I see more.  I felt that way with his work in the U st show.  I wish I got to see more of it.  There's something wonderful about the form, and texture on raw canvas.  I need to spend more time with this work.  An alternative image is this one: http://artdc.org/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-3952 whcih we hung at the U st. show.  It looks like building tops seen from a birds eye which I think makes it fit nicely thematically with Antoinette's work even though it's visually very different.

I've got to think about this one more.  A painting with a statement.  I'd like to see the series.  What changes are we discussing here?  None the less, I'm a scientist, so I connect with an artist that uses math in their art.  Maybe that's what I like about art that obsesses about a concept.

Wings.  Back to the bird theme in a very different context.  Flight.  Escape...
There are things that I would do differently about the image if I was shooting it. I like the collage appearance with x-ray like wings, but something about the skirt disturbs me.  Maybe a nude figure...  Or something slightly different with the composition.  I'm not sure if this is the image to include with the show, but it's pushing towards a direction..  Angst maybe?  Possibly a begining for a theme.  Could we do a show on angst of a contemporary artist, with out pushing things into what would be to easy,  a figure show?

This is just a starting point.  Something to look at and think about what's next.  What's going to work along this line.  These images don't all work together in the context here, but possibly with more images, or maybe just less.  What is contemporary art, and what do we have in our on-line gallery to show.   This could be a very interesting project to look at further.

Nice colors, that's one thing I suggested.  It does make me think of spring, but re-birth, re-awakening... or contemporary art?  It really makes me think more of photo journalism.  Not that that's a bad thing.  There are some fine examples of realism out there.

Maybe we should fall back on some definitions and really discuss what contemporary art is.  There's a definition here: http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-cntmpryart.html

I like this section, "contemporary art the art of the late 20th cent. and early 21st cent., both an outgrowth and a rejection of modern art . As the force and vigor of abstract expressionism diminished, new artistic movements and styles arose during the 1960s and 70s to challenge and displace modernism in painting, sculpture, and other media."

Styles and artists they mention, Dada -like styles employed in the early 1960s and thereafter by Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns had widespread influence, as did the styles of many other artists. The most significant of the often loosely defined movements of early contemporary art included pop art , characterized by commonplace imagery placed in new aesthetic contexts as inAndy Warhol, Lichtenstein, Ellsworth Kelly and Frank Stella, multimedia components of happenings, minimalism.   I sort of paraphrased that, they do include hyper realism, which strikes me as interesting.

I think many people really think of contemporary meaning what's happening now, but what does it really mean, and how does this effect a selection of work when we call it artdc.org contemporary art, then put the focus on re-awakening..

What do you think?

Neat image.  Is it in the gallery?  Who's is it.  The general thing has been, we can't suggest our own images, and the show has to be curated from the work in the on-line gallery of artdc.org...

I would like to open the theme up to more current art that relates to the images in the first topic.  This work calls out to me.  I'll post more later.  If there's less than enough interest, I'll be happy to curate this show myself:

Maybe I take the subject a little to literally, but I've always thought of the image of a light bulb to relate to an idea.  Or one of the ultimate ideas that brought us out of the cold dark caves of history and into the modern world.  With out the real useful study of electricity would we have made the jump from light bulb to vacuum tube to transistor to IC, and the very server that this web page exists on?  I think that like the popular use of birds in our generation of contemporary art, the light bulb should be there as a very important symbol..
Alternatively we could use this image: http://artdc.org/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-5746  but I like the simplicity of the blue plate glass.

As I look back at grrlyj's image in the post above, I'm attracted to this one also.  Same reason.  The attraction to birds.  I think between the two images for this show it would have to be an either or situation, but I wanted to make sure that you all had a chance to see them both in context with the other images.

Black and white photographs contrast nicely with bright colors.  A nice nude / figure study works well with a spring or re-awakening theme.  There you are, exposed, no bull shit, that's who she is.  We should include another figure study or 2..

Neat work.  I'd like to see sharper photographs of it.  The red background is kinda neat, but I find my self looking at that sometimes more than the image.  I  love concrete and I think it's a very interesting material that needs more exposure.

One of haikstudio.com's images:   http://artdc.org/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-5604 was in our photo show, but I see that as n reason for preventing us from using another for this show.  I think the colors work nicely with the other possible suggested images in this exhibit.  Let's search for more images.  Think colors, yet don't be afraid of black and white!

I'm starting to lean away from the idea of re-awakening here, and more towards what's filling in the blanks in the show above.  I really think that it's ok to have work that contrasts with the subject theme.  The contrast can be a connection, as long as there's something holding it together, and it's not in a completely different direction.  Some of my thoughts behind including a nude are a few posts above...

More to come...

Also these.  The net doesn't do them justice.  Great texture of scratched images.  I like them a lot.  One  or 2 of these were in a show at the Heliport gallery.  Very cool work.  I'd like to see more of their stuff...  all that said, if it doesn't show as well on the net, this might not be the right venue for this image.  Still I figured I'd post it to see how it looks with the group.  A good example of how excellent documentation "could" really help get an image into the show.  If I was a painter I'd have 10 - 20 images of each work.  Detail shots from the font and side, really giving you an idea of depth and texture.  Right now with this image it's really tough to see what's going on...

Ha.  Did I say re-awakening?  Contemporary art?  Wintry Trees? Maybe instead we should consider a more spring like work by this artist?
But Really, I like the wintery image from it's technique and composition.  Again, the age old battle, content vs execution.  Who said it had to be spring.  Why fight myself over this image?  Well fitting the color theme of the images above, I like the work "garden of my soul"  but I'm still stuck on the tree composition!!

I really like the 2 sue holland pieces and the kanchan balse piece. I think they take a theme that is generally more traditional (landscape, streetscape) and make them contemporary.

These are all very delicate and I like how rrebold pointed out renewal/reawakening.  The intricateness (is that a word?) of them, combined with their colors, which ties them together, in my opinion, all contribute to this renewal them.  It is spring, afterall.  And, life is returning to the world.

I looked through the gallery with this theme in mind and would like to contribute the following, as well.

I basically searched the gallery for certain tags, including "red", "flowers", "spring", and "birds", and selected from there.
