February is going to be an amazing month.  We are doing something bright and wild.  We will be collaborating with 2 other independent galleries to create a month long movement in the celebration of that wonderful time full of love.  You know the day.  February 14th!  V-day.  We will be developing a semi-all inclusive show that will be curated in one space, and then split between 3 galleries.  The fun will be finding your work.

Saint Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14.  Lovers express their emotions by sending gifts, cards, and themselves.  There's an energy which drives us to fall in love, philosophers, scientists, and artists all study it.  Lust is an intense craving for their lover and has been a tremendous force in the development of art and the creative spirit.  Lust is joyful and painful at the same time.  Donte compaired it to being continuously swept around in a whirlwind where they cannot cleanse their soul and will never purge their minds from their desire.  Lust controls many of us with muscle truck unstoppable force!  With that in mind we would like to explore our lustful creativity with a tremendous ground breaking show which crosses the barrier into multiple galleries.  As a group, each gallery director will curate the show as a group, and we will divide the work between our spaces as a whole exhibit!  Lust will create a movement for the month of February in the DC area!

We will be looking for a wide variety of art ranging from publicly accessible art PG-13 and below to much spicier concepts! This is not an errotic art show, and Strictly adult themed images or pornography will not be accepted since we really want to explore this unstoppable whirlwind of fear, need, anxiety and desire.  Lust moves much deeper than sex, it's power.  We want to see a wide range of work from the science behind love to those gentle images of lovers holding hands to heat and desire to related abstraction.  We reserve the right to curate the show to keep art related to the theme and to deny work that doesn't meet our requirements.  The Jury members will be Cheryl Edwards, Erica Riggio, and Jesse Cohen.

The art galleries involved are:

The Cheryl Edwards Studio Gallery
Directed by Cheryl Edwards
4103-4105 Rhode Island  Ave
Brentwood, MD 20722

The artdc Gallery in Hyattsville
5710 Baltimore Ave.
Hyattsville, MD 20781
www.artdc.com

Design Studio Art Gallery
Directed by Erica Riggio and Nancy Evans
5702 Baltimore Avenue
Hyattsville, MD 20781-1620
(301) 779-4907
www.designstudioartgallery.com‎

With the possibility of a 4th space TBA

We think this is a tremendously exciting event to show this great deal of work in multiple spaces.

Install date: Feb. 6. 2010
Reception date: Feb. 14 2010
Deinstall date: March. 6. 2010

Hanging Fee:
$10.00 per work of art cash

Commission on sales:
14% in celebration of the 14th of February
(each gallery may have their own specific details on sales practices some spaces conduct sales through the gallery, others are direct through the artist.  You will be contacted with details after the hanging).

We are dealing with a large amount of space and expect to hang at least 200 to 250 works of art.  Art will be accepted until there's no space left!  The galleries will hang the art.  We will be searching for volunteers to aid this process.

Requirements: The art must be professionally presented. No clip on frames.  All hung work must have a wire on the back.
We accept no liability, if it's a concern, artists must provide their own insurance.  We reserve the right to limit the number of submissions in order to show a wide range of work.  We estimate that there should be no problem allowing artists to hang up to 5 to 10 works depending on space availability.

Size: due to the large number of available works of art, we request that you limit your work to 24x30

Artists must label their work with the following tag.  We will not accept unlabeled work.

Jesse,
I am so excited about this show. The fact that all of our spaces are coming together to form one giant exhibit is hot! Cannot wait to get started and begin accepting work! And, the fact that lust is such a power emotion and runs the gamut of possibilities in terms of interpretation is going to make the body of works even more diverse and interesting!

Great idea.

When you issue the official call for entries, you may want to clarify whether you will show all submitted work or whether the show is curated (only selected work will be shown).

Sure thing, as in the first post:

We will be developing a semi-all inclusive show that will be curated in one space, and then split between 3 galleries.  We reserve the right to curate the show to keep art related to the theme and to deny work that doesn't meet our requirements.  The Jury members will be Cheryl Edwards, Erica Riggio, and Jesse Cohen.

What that basically means is it's close to all inclusive, we have certain requirements for each space so there will be a Jury on site that will select the work to make sure it meets our requirements.  (I.e. some spaces have limitations on how graphic an image can be displayed!)

It's going to be a very lose selection process rather than a "curated exhibition."  It's our goal to show as wide a range of work as possible so we are going to accept a lot of things.  For some of the spaces we need a lot of PG-13 work, where as other spaces can accept spicier work. We will not accept porn.  It will be up to the group at the time, and we'll be very happy to work with artists. You are welcomed to run things by us a head of time, however with the goal of 250 to 300 works of art at least, we feel it's too difficult a task to take care of via email.

So the real requirement will be that the work fits the theme.  We would like to remind artists that Lust moves beyond just nude works of art.  There's science, philosophy and more!

It's a psuedo juried exhibition.  My hope is that we say no as little as possible! Email me off line if you have more specific questions.

We have a lot of fun plans for this show and we hope to see you all get involved!

We'll also be looking for gallery sitters!

I find it really exciting that this show will be so big that there will be room for multiple works per artist!  5 to 10 or possibly more

I have a couple of questions and thought I'd post here...

...curated in one space, and then split between 3 galleries.

1.  Will the work be curated ahead of time or on the day of the install (Feb. 6th)?

The art galleries involved are:

The Cheryl Edwards Studio Gallery
The artdc Gallery in Hyattsville
Design Studio Art Gallery
With the possibility of a 4th space TBA

2.  Which space should artwork be brought for curating?
3.  Will this be the same location to pick up work at the end of the show  on March. 6th?

Hanging Fee:
$10.00 per work of art cash

Commission on sales:
14% in celebration of the 14th of February

...We estimate that there should be no problem allowing artists to hang up to 5 to 10 works depending on space availability...

...The galleries will hang the art.  We will be searching for volunteers to aid this process...

A $10 hanging fee means that up to 10 pieces will equal up to $100 to participate (plus the 14% gallery commission on sales)

4.   Will the hanging fee be waived for volunteers who aid in the installation?

We accept no liability, if it's a concern, artists must provide their own insurance.

I'm not concerned about the artdc gallery as I have exhibited there before and know that doors are locked and there's a security system for the time the exhibit isn't open to the public. However, I'm not as familiar with the other galleries participating.

5.    Do all of the participating galleries have similar security to the artdc gallery?

Quote from:  RHPS

...Don't dream it — Be it!

That's all the questions I have for now.  Thanks!

1.  Will the work be curated ahead of time or on the day of the install (Feb. 6th)?

No, and please read the topics above, it's not really curated, The show is semi all inclusive, we just want to make sure that the art meets an absolute minimum of requirements.  I.e. no porn, it must be professionally presented, and the work must fit the theme.  For instance if an artist brings in a landscape painting of Antarctica, and to us the work doesn't fit the theme of Lust, and the artist has no statement or explanation of how it meets the theme, then we wouldn't be able to hang it.  Because then it would just be an all inclusive show and not a themed show.  Please don't take the word curate out of context, this is not some unknown panel making huge decisions about what's in and what's not.  We'd like everyone possible in this show, we just want to make sure that the work meets the theme, and that the artists respect us, themselves, and the space with professional presentation.

2.  Which space should artwork be brought for curating drop off?
To the artdc Gallery in the Lustine center.

3.  Will this be the same location to pick up work at the end of the show  on March. 6th?
No, you'll pick up the work from the space that it's exhibited in.

A $10 hanging fee means that up to 10 pieces will equal up to $100 to participate (plus the 14% gallery commission on sales)
Yes.  The average gallery charges 40% commission or more. Many have much higher hanging costs The average art space costs well over $1000 bucks a month to run.  Add the costs of multiple spaces.  The money has to come from some where.  While in addition to others, I know Cheryl and Erica put a great deal of money into these spaces.  Well beyond what they make.   In order to offer unusual low-cost-to-the-artist events, we have to charge something.   We feel this opportunity is offering artists an unusually low cost.  The decreased commission = decreased income.  We're hoping this is made up through the hanging fee.  Compare to other local annual shows with smaller size restrictions for instance the popular artdc 12x12 show where artists paid $12, this show is $10.  We're working hard to market this exhibition as it's an unusual show.  We look forward to having many people involved.

4.   Will the hanging fee be waived for volunteers who aid in the installation?
Sadly no.  But that's not unusual.  Many other local art shows require volunteer time in addition to a Fees.  We're making it optional.

5.    Do all of the participating galleries have similar security to the artdc gallery?
Similar, with in reason.  All spaces have commercial locks to my knowledge.  I know that the Design Studio Gallery does also have an electronic alarm.
None of the spaces should be open when un-attended.  For gallery sitters we plan to have a key sign out form so when can track who's been when and where.  While the artdc gallery can't be responsible for the other gallery's security, I personally would feel comfortable showing in either location and intend to include my work in the show.

Hm. 2310 artists are registered here on artdc.org.  What would happen if only 25% showed up and registered for this show?!
That would be simply amazing.  This is a unique show opportunity.  I hope it succeeds.  I'd love to see more shows like this develop.
Movements develop out of community and interaction. How amazing would it be if galleries were working together creating their own movement while supporting the Washington, DC area art scene at the same time.

Sure thing! As posted above:
Install date: Feb. 6. 2010

We'll open the doors, you all bring the art and the fee, and we'll hang it most likely the same day.  We are also very happy if you or others would like to volunteer and stick around to help with the process.  It's going to be a zoo!

Please respond here if you can help after the art drop off.
