Call to Artists: The ZIP Code Show
« on: July 02, 2009, 10:59:32 PM »
So, what about space?

The ZIP Code Show is about artists and their relationships with their surroundings. This summer offering – Aug 29 though Sept 5, 2009 — from artdc.org and Art Outlet is being presented in partnership with Halstead Arlington and the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization.

In The ZIP Code Show, artists use ZIP codes—a system of delimited packets of landscape devised by the U.S. Post Office in 1963 to respond to “the modern technology imperative” and make our lives better and more efficient—to facilitate personal dialogues between themselves and the physical, biological, and cultural features of the earth.

Registration is FREE and runs through July 31.

Location: The ZIP Code Show is located at Halstead Arlington 1028 South Walter Reed Drive in Arlington, VA 22204
Logistics: Brick walls with wodden braces; concrete floors and columns; drywalls; 2 empty retail stores on street level
Size: 18 ft tall ceilings; square footage is 1225 sqf (smaller unit) and 1490 sqf (larger unit)

I'm very excited about this show.  The theme is exciting, and it's practically in my back yard!

This is quite an intriguing idea for a show. I often think about the effect of our environments in my work, as well as the intersection of city and the natural world. It looks like we have about 2 months to create a piece ...

Yes. Register now at art outlet's site, with a description of your plans, and then send pictures later.
For an interesting aspect, think about IP address as an alternative to zipcode.

There is no harm in registering, since you are not being charged if you are not curated in.  :smt004
If you like to produce a new piece of artwork, simply describe the art in 2 short paragraphs.

You need to register first in order to get to the form.

Me neither. Am I thinking too literally?

Be literal if you like.  We're looking for art that relates to location.  ZIP Codes, Area Codes, IP addresses or your interpretation of your home location.  Frankly there's a hell of a lot of room for flexibility and creativity with in the call.

"The ZIP Code Show is about artists and their relationships with their surroundings."

Work with that thought in your mind.

A note to anyone who might be confused about the Fees for this show.
It costs nothing to register and apply.  If you are selected, it costs $30 to participate.
There is zero required commission on the sales of art work.  Let's repeat that.  ZERO Commission.

We've been working hard to bring a ground breaking exhibition of art to the Washington, DC area, and this is a tremendous opportunity in an even more amazing space.  $30.00 is a small fee to participate in any Zero Commission show.

For those familiar with Art Outlet's first partnership with artdc.org in "Flux" we've had a tremendous turn out filling an area with great creativity, in our opinion, well worth the effort and small financial contribution.  Further, Art Outlet is a 501c3 so the fee is tax deductible.

The fact is that it takes a small amount of finance to make anything happen, and we feel that this will be a tremendous opportunity, and well worth the $30.00 contribution.

hi guys- i  submitted images for the show yesterday..."mail art series" 2,3 5, 6 and 7. there are explanations of each piece, along with descriptions of the mixed media and the sizes of each piece.
i submitted each piece separately.

can you let me know that you have received them all and they are in the right size for viewing, etc.

although the "mail"  in each piece, along with clear zip codes from several different countries, is mail i received when i lived in europe, the art pieces were recently created using the mail. these are not "old" art pieces.

i am leaving for france and spain 9 july and will not return until 14 august. if one (or more) of my pieces are accepted i may not be able to pay you right away as i won't be here. is it possible for you to "hold my slot(s) for me? you know i am good for the money.
is it $30 for each piece accepted or $30 even if multiple pieces are accepted??

thanks for all your help and for answering my questions (you know i always have many!). you're both swell!

i am looking forward to the show. a collaboration of artdc and artoutlet is sure to be an amazing show!!!!!

Cool.  I'm glad you're excited too.  It's $30 registration for the show.  Not each work.

too literal is getting in my way too, I would like to be active and participate but i honestly feel like I could throw any painting in and pretend like it works.  I don't know how to feel about that.   Of course I'm a little down and eating chocolate today.

Perhaps someone could give me an example?

Forget the word ZIP  Code for a moment and focus on "The ZIP Code Show is about artists and their relationships with their surroundings."
To me, it excited me to think about art that relates to your home, your surroundings, your space.  When I was a kid, I would have represented that with an image of me behind the drums in my garage with the cops banging on the door due to the neighbors that never gave up bitching.  Now it might be an image of me behind the laptop with the stereo on.  To another artists it may be a more abstracted view of the world around them literally using zip codes or area codes in the work.  How would you paint a representation or abstracted image of your location.  To some generation x or y kids you may represent that view of your self behind the computer with your IP address.  Does 68.49.39.210 define your existence through your location at the moment?  Or would you rather think of your self as a 202 girl instead of 703.  What does location mean to you.  Represent your location, your home in your art?

Lately I've been thinking a lot about this show, and I think about 127.0.0.1   .  The standard loop back address.  If you ping that number, you end up back at your own computer.  It makes me think of that line..   along the lines of finding your self, "where ever you go, there you are..."

In reference to the relationship with your surroundings, it could be a photograph or a painting including your zipcode, or for that matter, just an image of your surroundings, or an abstraction of your surroundings.

There are so many ways to play with this one line.  What does  your relationship with your surroundings mean to you.

Think , "There's no place like 127.0.0.1  ..."

But seriously, that's my take on it.  For you, it could be a landscape of your house.  A picture of a nude lounging in her favorite chaise.  Really a depiction, abstraction or something else that relates to your personal surroundings possibly with an emphasis on zicode, areacode, or ip address.
