jenniferbeinhacker.com---art outside the edge
« on: August 19, 2008, 09:37:02 AM »

hi everyone-since i had such a great experience posting in my "jennifer's 08 aom exp." thread, and since aom is over (until the next one!) and it's time to move forward to new art and life happenings , i thought i'd start a new topic. i plan to post about my art, projects i am working on, shows i'm in, art related get togethers, and other life happenings. i'll try not to get too tangential.......but those of you that know me know how chatty i can be (for a new york gal)....so feel free to comment if you feel i'm getting too off base.
i hope you'll all drop by, say hi, any comments about what i post would be most appreciated, questions (i am good at making up answers if i don't know! ha!), etc.
looking forward to talking with you all again. now that i'm back from west africa and jet lag has somewhat subsided i am ready to move on.............

                  see you soon.

                                        jennifer

     my current art show:

                                  all arlington (summer) salon
                                  ellipse arts center
                                  4350 fairfax drive
                                  arlington, va 22203
                                  m-f 11am-7pm, sat. 11am-2pm

every year the ellipse arts center hosts a "summer salon" showcasing work of arlington artists. arlington, a very "happening place", is a wonderful "sponsor" for artists who live or work in arlington. and this is much appreciated by arlington residents, folks who come to arlington for all the fun actvities and by we artists. arlington "takes good care" of it's cultural programs and the folks who generate them. there are two great gallerys in arlington...the ellipse and the arlington arts center (both of whom i have had a long association with).
this summer i was traveling in west africa when my art piece had to be delivered for hanging so my son david brought it in for me. neal and i went to see the show this past saturday and i was very pleased and impressed with the art pieces in the show. there was a diversity of art that ranged from mixed media to painting to sculpture to metal work to quilt to photography etc etc.  this was such an eclectic  show and therefore could be difficult to hang...but again, i was quite impressed with how the show was hung and art pieces arranged so that the diversity of art didn't jar one but rather flowed quite smoothly one from "style" to the next.
i have a long association with the ellipse. awhile ago i worked there (on a volunteer basis) as a gallery sitter. i also was an "assistant curator" for the middle school/high school art shows that are held there and helped arrange the art show in conjunction with arlington's sister city, acchen (germany). i certainly learned alot, not just about how to do art, but about the business of running a gallery.
i was pleased to see, in this year's show, that i was hanging in the company of other (arlington) aom-ers, artdc-ers and artoutlet artists. their art works were ones i would have been drawn to but it was extra special for me to "know" them!

the show runs until 13 sept. hope you all get a chance to do a gallery visit and see the show.

below two pix of me and my art. note the "pants from west africa" i am wearing.......it looks like i planned the color of them to go with the art piece. my piece is to the left of me as you view the pix. i am hanging in the "brown" section!

txs danny. it's good to be back...well...kinda...neal & i are missing our african adventure and still having "trouble" remembering where we are. the other night i awoke and looked around and didn't recognize my bedroom as belonging to me and couldn't figure out which african country (of the 5 we went to) i was in. neal also got confused when he awoke one night, didn't know where he was, couldn't find the bathroom and therefore walked into the closet!
we've narrowed down the 4000 pix we took to 2700 and still need to do a second look-see to narrow it down further before we make slide shows (of each country) to show our friends and family. we are enjoying sitting at our computer looking and re-looking at all our pix but certainly won't subject folks to all 2000 plus.
neal, a middle school geography teacher, at tj middle school in arlington, has printed out and mounted on poster board many pictures to be used in his class. so...even while teaching day to day he'll get to see our adventure. plus, what a broadening experience for "his kids" to learn about africa first hand. even when we look at our pictures we know they don't convey the noise, smell, dirt, poverty, starvation, color of the land and clothes of the different tribes, chaos, both urban and rural, of africa. the pictures and/or travelogues one usually sees are so "sanitized". they just can't seem to capture what it is really like there.
i hope, sometime soon, to post a few pix here to give the essence of what we experienced.

as i had mentioned in my postings during my africa adventure (on jennifer's 08 aom thread) i found much to be excited about and inspired by art-wise. one of my more favorite experiences was visiting the festish market in lome, togo. this is a large, open air sand covered market where fetishmen bring their herbs, animal parts (supposedly from no killed animals...all died natural deaths), bones, stones, skulls, etc. a person goes to their fetsihman to have their ailment diagnosed. the fetishman tells the individual what potions they need to remedy their particular problem. they then bring their "prescription" to the fetish market and purchase what is needed. bring it back to their fetishman and the remedy is concocted. the "medicine" is used only for "good". no "bad spells" or "evil" on others is made because if you have something bad made to harm another person it will come back to you and injure you in the end. i like this philosophy. what is slightly amusing is that i make a similar art piece(s)...my "magical box" series (which some of you may remember from aom 07 the market place). the boxes i make are to be used only for white magic and contain many objects that i insert....small dolls, bones, skulls, beads, etc. each of my boxes comes with a "guarantee" that no harm will come to the purchaser of the box. i have sold many of them and they have been displayed in the whitney museum in new york.

here are some photos of the market. knowing me you can see why i was so attracted to this market and spent many many hours there. true, i'm not a "photo artist" so forgive the pix. they need some work...cropping perhaps, some lightening, etc. but wanted to share them with you asap esp. as they related to art that i do.

hey lexi-txs for dropping by to say hi. appreciate it. glad you liked the festish photos (eventually i'll crop and re-post them so they can be seen clearer......i do so love those skulls and dead animals!).

i'm pleased to be read again and writing again....i really enjoy posting on artdc/aom and sharing my thoughts, etc. was glad that we could find as many internet cafes as we did (wasn't sure we'd find any....and the dial up system was soooooo slow and sometimes wouldn't access artdc at all!). i especially enjoyed sharing our african adventure with you all....in spite of the numerous typos (typing with a french keyboard is not oh la la).

yes, we brought back some "objects" with us....i would have loved to buy everything in the fetish market but can't bring "dead animals" (or live i guess) into the states so had to content myself with "sneaking through customs" several jaws (of cows and goats), with delicious teeth, and also bones, that i found in the sahara desert and other locales. i was sure they'd be confiscated when they went through the x-ray machines, but guess accra, ghana ( our departure point) doesn't care what you take in your carry-on luggage! lucky me as i will use them in future art projects. also brought back numerous shells from our several palm tree lined beach times.......the shells, from the west side of the atlantic ocean are the same as the shells i collect from the east side of the atlantic, with the exception of the cowrie shells i picked up on the beaches...the cowrie shell use to be used as the currency of africa. guess with the numerous cowrie shells i found i'm now a rich gal! also brought back beads from ghana (and mali). the beads...all hand made glass beads, are quite beautiful and will also be used in future art projects....with the exception of the 5 bracelets (one is an antique bracelet...but even current beads are all handmade in the old old traditional way) i am wearing and neal's two....plus the 5 necklaces. also brought back several amulets that i am wearing and neal has a necklace that protects him against snakes.  since we had the experience of spending the day making beans at "cedi industry" we are pleased to have the beads to wear. also we spent time, in mali, learning to make mud cloth and brought back the two pieces we made, plus a table runner that was made by the guy we worked with. also learned how to weave kente cloth (but didn't buy any), make baskets, make drums and various other artisan objects. the trip was an art making-learning how to experience and i know i'll get to use everything i learned in art pieces.
of course the best thing we brought back were our experiences......all we saw, everyone we met.......these will be with us forever.

fun that we are "ellipsing" together" (say hi to my piece) and  great that you are writing also.

      upcoming art show:
                                  monster truck art show
art outlet....co-sponsored with artdc and 88
                                  october 3/4 '08
two locations: silver spring, md and arlington, va.
see art outlet site for further details

i am quite excited about this upcoming show. was in ( my first with) the art outlet "day of the dead" show oct. 07 and it was a blast......art, music, dancing (and the fact that i sold two art pieces made it all the more sweeter).
art outlet always puts on a rad show and should be quite fun this year......art on trucks......monsters in trucks....performance art....music.......a bbq (i believe).....and other assorted happenings. this will be a group collaborative effort and we artists will help assemble the show.
art outlet having the first pre-planning get-together this friday, 22 august, at solly's u street tavern, d.c.. looking forward to attending and seeing you all (since i've been away haven't seen anyone in ages  and it will be sweet to hang out again). am driving there  with jesse....totally cool! a jesse/jennifer road trip!
will let you know more details as i find them out.
i found out about the show before we left for west africa so knew i wouldn't have time, once returning, to create any monsters.......so looked around my studio and found the "perfect" ghoulish piece to exhibit. it's titled "dialogues of the dead........first dialogue" and is acrylic on wood.  (see pix below)

finally got myself back into my studio. i don't know if anyone else has this experience, but i find that when i am away, especially as far away as africa is and for so loooooong.....it is hard to get back into my "everyday routine". neal and i feel like we still should be in africa (i dream every night that i am still there). i miss the green slime in the streets, the dirt and filth, the numerous markets, eating street food, the noise and chaos, speaking french, the heat, the palm tree lined ocean, wearing the same clothes every day and washing them out in the sink at night, all the people we met, riding camels, canoeing down the niger river to timbuktu, going from village to village and talking with the woman about my life and theirs, etc.

i am starting slow and have surrounded myself (in my studio) with all the bones, stones, shells, cloth, papers, and other strange and exotic found objects that i picked up in the streets (and totally sanitized before putting them in my backpack)........it's a start..........maybe tomorrow i'll look at them again...maybe i'll even do something with them.......maybe i'll just go back to africa...........

attended the "monster truck show" pre-planning meeting last night at solly's u st. tavern. lots of artoutlet/artdc folks there. was good to see everyone again.  pleased at the warm "welcome back from africa" greetings that i got.....and that folks had actually read my african adventures on my "jennifer's  '08 aom exp." thread (it's not too late folks to read it if you haven't. it's still there....worth the read just for the fun of laughing at all my typos as i tried to master the sticky french keyboard and failed miserably  :iconlol:).

henrik gave out lots of great info about the show..the what, when, where and how the set up will occur. i signed up to help with the de-install. and, will also try to get there early friday oct. 3 to help hang the show. henrik said there will be other pre-planing meetings (maybe every friday?) as we continue to put this show together. i'm sure he'll be posting all the good details on the artoutlet site.

jesse also told us about the artdc installation piece that he and lexi are putting together. if i understand correctly it involves "dumpster diving" (yummy! i'm use to dirt/filth after this summer!) and other assorted fun things. it will be a group artdc effort and i hope to take part in that also.

curious.......who all is going to be participating in this show.......what other "monsters" will i be in the company of???????

Good to see you and good to have you back in town, Jennifer.

I was surprised to see so many -old- previously-familiar faces among the new.  There's a lot of overlap amongst the artdc, Art Outlet and Artomatic crowds.  This Monster Truck show sounds like a fun event.

     today is a stellar day..........it's helena's 4th birthday!

birthday party at the lee recreation center in alexandria, va.. lots of kids bouncing off walls in the padded playroom. a fun safe place for little kids to get rid of their excessive energy. then after an hour of bedlam time for singing the happy birthday song, while helena beamed. she asked all her friends to help her blow out the candles. the "theme" was "tinkerbelle" and she was everywhere..on the helium balloon that neal and i brought, the plates, napkins, cups, blowers, and even as the centerpiece in the cake that christine made.  helena loved the chocolate cake with handmade flowers , topped with chocolate ice cream. the moms/dads/younger brothers and sisters of helena's friends also partook of the goodies. then party bags were handed out to the kids (filled with crayons, coloring books, games and other assorted fun kid stuff). the sun was shining and everyone piled outside to get rid of the "sugar high" in the playground.

later neal and i will go back over to david, christine and helena's house for peruvian chicken dinner. opening the birthday presents will follow dinner and i'm sure more cake will also be part of the festivities.

neal and i bought helena a digital camera as a present. it's a samsung 3860.8-1 mega pixel ( for those of you who know cameras, which i don't but neal does....maybe this will make sense to you), not a "kid's camera". helena has been taking pictures with our camera since she was around 18 months old and loves to photograph everything..people, her toys, the cat, clouds, trees, bugs, etc. and since we bought her camera in "pink" i think it will be a great success as a present.

more later...with maybe a picture of the beautiful birthday girl........

here are two pictures of the beautiful helena at her birthday. in the first  helena is in the "gazillion of balls" space.......

a follow up:  helena looooooooved the camera neal and i gave her. when she opened the packaging and saw the camera she said: "it's PINK"..and hugged the camera. and then proceeded to take pictures of my green nail polished toes!

tomorrow helena comes for a sleepover. she's been clamoring for a sleepover ever since we returned from africa. in fact she wanted to sleep over the day we returned but david and christine (wisely) told her we were probably tired from all the flying and we need a few days rest. we'll do all sorts of things when she's here..swimming in the pool, having her favorite dinner (when she's here): scrambled eggs and black beans, going to the playground after dinner, a loooooooong bath with all gazillion of her bath toys and then "movie night" (a "princess" theme type movie/ cartoon format...or maybe a shirley temple movie. she loves to sing and dance along with "curly shirley" as she calls her) with ice cream and sprinkles. and of course the fun of her snuggling in our bed when she wakes up wednesday morning...ah....life is good!

went for my annual "well baby check up" (physical) this morning......lowered my BP (from a year ago) by 31 points..it wasn't high high to start with but i wanted it lower. how is this "art related" you may ask..........well....good health necessary to keep doing those art pieces!
