The DC Conspiracy / Re: Local comic store with lots of bins?
« on: April 04, 2012, 12:44:49 PM »
Thanks for the Richmond tip, Chris.

As far as Northern Va. goes, I've since visited E.G. Comics in Vienna (142 Maple Avenue West). They have well-organized bins & bins of comics. I wasn't able to find any Barks, but did get a bunch of long-ago Frank Miller Daredevils.

Can someone point me toward a local comic store that carries tons of old comics? Preferably in Va. Thanks!

The DC Conspiracy / Big Saul Bass book
« on: November 14, 2011, 02:27:01 PM »
News of interest to graphic designers anywhere.

A very big art-book showcasing Saul Bass's work came out recently.  428 pages, 1400 illustrations (most, very small), 6 pounds plus.

Title: Saul Bass: A Life in Film & Design, by Jennifer Bass and Pat Kirkham, 2011. Available on amazon for a paltry $44.

Saul Bass (1920-1996) was a famous and influential graphic designer from the 50s into the 90s. He did movie credits (e.g., Vertigo), posters, lots of commercial projects including many corporate logos. Quite modernist. Odd that it's taken decades for a suitable Bass book to come out. But finally it has.

The DC Conspiracy / Re: "TRON: Legacy" worthwhile?
« on: January 08, 2011, 09:01:32 PM »
Just in time, from Wikipedia:

"As an acknowledgment of VHS popularity, in 2009 Panasonic has announced the world’s first dual deck VHS-Blu-ray player."

"In 2010, 'The House of the Devil' received promotional distribution on VHS and is available exclusively on Amazon.com with a DVD copy of the film."

And of course, I say that some can detect the superior fidelity, warmth, and tonal quality of VHS, which eludes the coldness of digital media....      :-)

$12 and a tub of popcorn later. Best things: being in a black theater watching the movie's 3D white-on-black color scheme, and the vast shapes and forms, even though they had a nonsensical-ness about them.

Worst thing: plot, the fisticuffs, and people crying "NOOOOooooo" like in a hundred other movies.

Michael Sheen (the nightclub owner) played PM Tony Blair in "The Queen." He's everywhere.

3D theater a must. On VHS this film wouldn't be great shakes.

Is "TRON" worthwhile?

An immersing movie experience?  For me to commit $12 and several hours next week? (Plot, or lack thereof, isn't a factor here.)

Apologies to Father Time

Hey Patrick--hope you're recovering in September, as compared to August. Give us an update and appear in the flesh when you can.

(Cheers from Art)

The DC Conspiracy / Re: Postcard from Brazil
« on: May 23, 2010, 03:23:30 PM »
Glad you liked the pix. And that painting.

(1) That indeed is the "Meeting of the Waters"; the upper Amazon (brown) and Negro river (black). It's an amazingly sharp divide. Only when you get close do you see maybe a 6-foot mixing-area, so to speak. The Negro is basically mosquito-free, due to acidity in the water. Why that's so in one river but not the other, I don't know.

(2)  While my jaw was dropping, I wish I'd paid more attention to the painting's origin and artist. Price tag seems to say 800 reals, which would be $US400. Artist's signed name looks like "Ourfr" or "Qurfu"; google not helpful. His/her day will come, I hope.

The guide reached into the weeds and found us a caiman who was less than 3 feet long, head to tail. He showed off its jaw, five-clawed front feet (if I remember right). I touched its tail. The caiman was thrilled to be released from this show and tell--shot away with a lemme-out-of-this-charade attitude.

(Guide was a terrific guy, I should add.)

I'm in Brasilia, back from the falls. Photos to come, probably all moody cloud-scapes. Exciting, yes?

The DC Conspiracy / Postcard from Brazil

Hi from the Southern Hemisphere. On our friend Rick's invite (he works in Brasilia) I took the plunge and flew down 2 weeks ago. No Portuguese, which makes things a little more difficult. I was in Rio, Manaus, and from there (wait for it) went down the Amazon on a riverboat, something I've always wanted to do. It took 4 days. Was halfway between living "Heart of Darkness" (albeit going the opposite way), and taking a crowded Greyhound bus crosscountry. I'm now in Brasilia.

Various mild adventures. Lots of packing and unpacking. And the country is cooler (temp wise) than DC summers (aka the The Sun's Anvil).

Everything you've heard about beautiful Brazilian women is true.

I go home next week. See you all then.

Hi Patrick. Hope your leg and you are continuing to mend. See you in the near by-and-by. Take care till then. Best to your family.

(I'm out of town and clearly need to check this board more rigorously.)

The DC Conspiracy / "John Carter of Mars" movie
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:59:01 AM »
Edgar Rice Burroughs's Mars is headed for the big screen. It's already being shot, and will come out (apparently) in 2012. The director is Andrew Stanton, who directed Pixar features. This is a live-action movie, however.

One summer at poolside, I read a number of the Mars books; melodrama-action-wise, they are fresh as a daisy.

Thanks for the tip for places to post my SPX snapshots.

I now have a Flickr account and arrived at DCConspiracy pool. However, my request to join & post photos requires approval by a moderator.

Anyone know who this moderator is?
