Self Portrait exhibition in the works.
« on: May 27, 2008, 09:26:57 AM »
Dear Artistes.
For quite some time, Art Outlet has been mulling over the idea for a portrait show. We wanted to brand the name of the program "SELF - Myself, Yourself, Ourselves." Under SELF we will launch several inititiatives. "Self-Portrait" being the first one.

It will be an all media event and contains several components which will interact with each other. "Self-Portrait" will look back onto art history -- from Albrecht Dürer's famous self portrait (where he portrayed himself as Jesus Christ) http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/durer/self/self-28.jpg, Frida Kahlo's stunning portraits, to more modern interpretations of identity and portraiture by Chuck Close or Cindy Sherman stills. We seek traditional and non-traditional art.

Online, film/animation, audio, visual art, installation, and performances. All art forms will be accepted. The important thing will be that every submission must have a short descriptive paragraph about the work. There will be an artist dialogue and much more to come once the idea grows.

"Self Portrait" will be the first visual art salon. We are looking for space right now and will publish more information on our web site very soon.

Stay tuned. Your Art Outlet.

very cool!  i know a lot of us have done self portraits... there's a whole thread devoted to it.  they vary from simple to extremely non-traditional (i'm seeing jack's AOM piece as a candidate here).  i have a few myself, so i'd be interested in that, and will stay tuned indeed!

an exciting concept for a show.........and i agree erin, the self portrait thread has been fascinating.....it's interesting to me how  (and what)  we reveal ( of) ourselves on "self portraits".

      i'll be staying tuned also.

I'm also looking forward to an Art Outlet Self Portrait exhibition!

I prefer to create artwork that is offbeat and whimsical but having studied at art college I can paint more seriously when I want to. The self portrait series I did years ago was recently picked to be included in ArtDC's promotional brochure. It would be cool to frame and display this series and/or create something new for a show like this.

Yes, we are trying hard to plan for a Portrait Show in 2008/09. It has been on my personal wish list for at least 2 years now. And finally, we are getting our asses in gear to write up the language for the concept of the exhibition and an ongoing program.

As an artist, to place a self portrait against an entire book of art history, filled with amazing self portraits, is quite a challenge and daunting at first. My head keeps spinning, but then again, one should just cut loose and simply produce. Out of the belly and not from the head.  :smt112

Art Outlet wants to do a show on portraits, stay assured!. In the meantime, we are nailing down more  specifics on the Monster Truck show. Both programs will have plenty of meat to chew on.

We might get the portrait show started virtually first and then move it into the real world.....

About SELF:
http://artoutlet.org/content/blogcategory/48/113/

SELF is a forum where artists explore self-portraiture in traditional and non-traditional media, a place where they can look back through art history or into the now and perhaps find new meaning or voice in their struggles for identity.

Portraiture has been created in many forms -- from Albrecht Dürer's self portrait depicting himself as Jesus Christ and Frida Kahlo's compelling self portrait paintings, to more contemporary interpretations of identity and portraiture such as Chuck Close’s photorealism, Howardena Pindell's word paintings and videos, Robert Mapplethorpe's photo identities, Cindy Sherman’s film stills and staged photo sets, and modern day explorations of identity by Cai Guo-Qiang .

SELF looks beyond the surface of living and mines art and life for new avenues of SELF expression.

You can re-launch this as a poll if you like.  The prickly character interests me the most.  I think they all look great ..

I like the winged one on top.
It sort-of has a vintage tattoo quality to it.

  hi henrik-
i agree...i like the "wing" the best. it would make a great pin and i have just the vintage leather bomber jacket to pin it on.

i've been thinking about how i would want to portray my "self" and have a few ideas percolating. question: i don't know if i can put brush to paint right now as i'm mega busy (aren't we all) getting ready for my africa trek 9 july (won't return until mid-august). is there a "deadline" for the on-line virtual gallery? if i don't get a "self" on the on-line virtual gallery can i still participate in the "actual ("hardcopy" so to speak) show when it occurs?

txs in advance for your reply.

I clicked the link voted for the blue walking eyeball icon on the ArtOutlet website poll.  So far the blue eyeball is behind the winged thingy.  And the fuzzy feller is far behind them both.

I'd like to do this also.  If my face is out on display it will save wear and tear on my mirror.

Just wanted you all to know that Art Outlet has launched an online project called SELF this year. We have two open groups. Make sure to load up your self portraits there. I know Blue Face Killer has done so already. Next year we will ask curators to pick from the selected art for a real-world exhibition.

Greetings, Your Art Outlet.

Join Art Outlet's ongoing SELF project:

                      txs in advance.  jennifer
