So when is the next meeting? What would folks feel about moving the location? Last night (during the hellish ride on the Orange Line), I stopped by Galaxy Hut in Clarendon and saw Heather, who used to bartend at Dr. Dremo's. She works at G-Hut now.

#3 looks solid!  It was cool seeing so many of the conspirators at SPX today and hearing the good buzz about MB3.  I'm down to do a metro handout when we get some stacks.  Let me me know when and where Matt.

thanks all,
eric

The DC Conspiracy / Re: Advice Needed! How do you get your work seen?
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:08:49 PM »
Well, we do that, Hudson. But there's no substitute for beating the gumshoe and getting out there and actually meeting real people--whether you're a "slick talker" or an introvert. Aside from that, you do what the DCC does: pull our collective talent and resources together to promote the group as a whole, which benefits us as individuals. That is how we get articles about us in the Washington Post, City Paper, etc. That is how we gather the talent to produce Eisner-nominated books like 'Trickster' and 'Postcards.' That is how local libraries and art studios reach out to us when they're interested in doing comics exhibits or workshops. That is all awesome, but you still gotta get out and met folks: See what the local "scene" is doing, get your name out there, participate, exhibit. I feel very privileged to have the opportunity now be able to pitch to publishers and get a direct response. But IMO that's only due to the years I spent doing shows, workshops, cultivating a network and doing the best comics that I can. Very few people can decide to enter an entertainment field--TV, movies, music--and go directly to the top. For the 99-percenters like myself, you work at it and hope for some luck.

Rafer offers sound advice. IMO, selling at zinefests and small press/indie shows have the best results--you develop friendships, readers get to chat with you, etc. Meeting other local creators is another way to show your work and to network, which is invaluable.
If you have never been to the Small Press Expo in Bethesda, I recommend spending a day there. It's coming up in a few weeks, Sept. 10-11. It's awesome--lots of inspiring work and a heck of a party atmosphere.
