Link List - Art Festivals, Craft Fairs, and Artist Markets
« on: February 05, 2007, 11:58:10 AM »
I thought it might be useful to start a discussion about the various weekend markets that exist in the DC Metro Region. I've always had a particular interest in these local events, because they seem like the perfect place to start a personal art business - provided that your particular brand of "art" is portable enough.

Those of you with experience selling at these (or any other) weekend events - were they good/bad/ugly? any advice for others?

For anyone else with an opinion - where would you choose to set up shop? is it worth it to sell at a weekend event?

And lastly: here is a list of links to local markets - (let's make it grow)

Eastern Market - Capitol Hill (weekly)

These might not fit, but here are some arts fairs that aren't every weekend:

It varies with each market.  I'd contact the organizers of each one...

I haven't done Arts on Foot (but I hear good things about that festival.)

Here's another BIG event for the list:

Adams Morgan Day - Arts on Belmont (yearly - 2nd Sunday of September)
http://www.adamsmorgandayfestival.com/

PS...
Adam's Morgan Day is DC's longest running street festival!
2009 is the their 31st annual event!  See you Sept. 13th!

also i wanted to add that Eastern Market looks so good now.
new pavers on the street, closed off to cars, rebuilt market. its really one of the few places that can help an artist in dc to be a full time artist.

Here's a new festival to check out...

Art Whino presents:
Marcātus Creative Art Market

A multidimensional event different than any other to reach the District.  Enjoy the sounds of live music, smells of exotic foods, eye candy of art, to hunt for creative treasures, or simply to relax on the Great Lawn with a frosty beverage taking in the picturesque views of the Anacostia River.

Location:
The Yards Park (Near the Nationals Ballpark)
10 Water St SE Washington, DC
(One block south of N and 3rd Streets, SE )
Three blocks from the Navy Yard Metro (New Jersey Ave Exit)
Event is free and open to the public

Schedule:
First Sunday of every month (Except July which will be Second Sunday).
April 3rd, May 1st, June 5th, July 10th, Aug 7th
Hours every Sunday: 11am-6pm.

Clarendon Day, Echo Park Holiday Arts fair

Silver Spring Fresh Farm Markets Saturdays, Sundays @Dupont year round, if you've got local sustainable organic ingredients in your arts, that can be marketable to food buyers, related to foods... recycled products like grocery bags/totes, and they love supporting / launching small biz artists if you're ready to commit, and there are 6-8 other locations seasonal Apr-May thru Sept-Oct

R Street Farmers Market near 2nd & R - Shaw NW 2 blks fm Rhode Island Ave

Clarendon Cup, whatever it's called now, Lance Armstrong has graced the tour de Clarendon here before, as well as other world olympic bikers, often has vendor space in/near the Clarendon Metro, completely blocked off from traffic like Clarendon Day Festival

What's the name of the one in Old Town Alexandria annual Fine Arts Fest?

Arlington arts Center sponsors an annual arts fest & open Studio for local artists, I think u just need to register to participate

Montplier Arts Center Laurel for those who are out that way sponsor several events a year

Glenn Echo Arts festival & juried art show at their new arts center & music hall is fabulous, lots of opportunities there also, mix of music & fine arts

Some of these require vehicle/beyond metro locations, however good opps for artists to enter in local fine arts & crafts shows, with monetary prizes & residency programs. I joined to take extra classes, esp print making silk screening, taught by top art teachers from surrounding colleges & art schools, very quality, esp to get discounts off classes you wouldn't normally try if it's lil out of budget at collegs, lots cheaper at the arts centers taught by same quality teachers, and chance to get into juried shows & sell your art works! + + +

I venture as far as AVAM Baltimore & Anapolis too, cuz it's one bug arts scene: have art, will travel to surrounding local areas to show & sell, limitless
