Top 10 Galleries in the area. Time to nominate.
« on: November 20, 2012, 03:40:28 PM »
What are your 10 favorite galleries in the DC metro area? Ok.  So I have to vote for artdc.

In no particular order, here are my favorites, the trouble is there are more than 10, so this makes it hard.  Say we email our top 10 pics to the new constant contact account in honor of DCís awesomeness?

So just off the cuff with out reasons, here are my favorites.  There are many more.  I didnít even scratch the surface to include great university galleries like the Katzen.    They should be on the list.  Anyhow, nominate who you like, and weíll create a new thread with a poll to get the top ten.

So here we go, nominate 10 or soÖ  Up to 15 of your favorite galleries, and why.  Why do you like them, what shows have you seen that moved you??? Remember, this is in no particular order, and weíll repost all of the nominations as a poll.

It was a sad day for me when Irvine closed.  They would be on the list too..

Ok..  the list goes on, I really enjoy the Target Gallery also.  www.torpedofactory.org

Hold me back.  I canít just list 10Ö.  you know thatÖ

Please feel free to reply beyond this list.  Who are your favorites?

You are welcomed to nominate any gallery I listed above.

These are the first ones that come to mind for me, mostly duplicates of those already mentioned:

39th Street Gallery (in the Gateway Arts Center)
www.39thStreetGallery.org

Brentwood Arts Exchange (in the Gateway Arts Center)
arts.pgparks.com/Our_Facilities/Brentwood_Arts_Exchange_Gateway_Arts_Center.htm

artdc Gallery (of course)
artdc.com

D. C. Arts Center

Transformer

Although this is in a different category the Phillips Collection is my favorite of the museum spaces:

With out switching gears too far (please keep posting your favorite galleries)  What makes a good gallery?  What makes a successful gallery.  Would it be showing your art, selling art, or creating a strong community representation of artist activity in the area?  I think this is a tough discussion because many galleries have different missions from selling art to creating community and beyond.

Thatís crazy Adah.  Almost obscene.   10 popups in one year?  :headonwall:  You are an amazing inspiration.  You get one of my votes!!!

I have to say that although I am totally prejudiced in this regard, I think The Art League gallery is one of the top ten galleries in the area. We provide original art by emerging and established local artists at affordable prices.

Yes.  I love the Art League.  Of course Iím biased since the Torpedo Factory was one of my first gallery experiences in the DC area when I returned from college years ago.  I lived in the neighborhood and visited regularly.  Then later, a few years ago I juried a show there which was a tremendous experience.  For those who havenít, there were over 900 entries in the gallery at that moment.  The League has a tremendous response in numbers and quality.  Beyond the show that I juried, I really loved Pamela Violaís show and Fierce Soniaís paper dolls, amongst many others.

For the few that donít know the space, or those that want to get back in touch, find it here:
