Time: 9am-12pm
Place: Hillyer Art Space

Celebrate FotoWeekDC and learn about the cyanotype process with DC-based artist Katherine Akey. Join us for bagels and coffee while Akey discusses her influences, her trip to the Arctic Circle, and how these have come together to inform her practice. Following her talk, Akey will lead a workshop on cyanotype prints using hand-made stencils.

Cyanotype is a method of photographic printing developed in the mid-1800s that produces a cyan-blue print. Originally used to reproduce notes or blueprints, the process was quickly adapted to print silhouettes of objects and stencils. Akey will discuss her interest and adaptation of cyanotypes, and instruct participants on how to cut and make a handmade stencil and use these to create cyanotype prints. All materials will be provided.

Space is limited so RSVP now! $22 for members, $30 for non-members.

Akey is primarily influenced by her profound love of reading, from childhood fantasies to the non-fiction she consumes on her commute. These stories bleed into her dreams and fuel the romantic, otherworldly aspects of her art, while her scientific background and penchant for academic reading bring a grounded, thoughtful tone. Themes of polar exploration, World War I, and early aviation figure prominently in her work.

Her recent work stems from a trip to the top of the world with the Arctic Circle Residency program in the fall of 2015. Weaving the northern landscapes of legend and the Golden Age of Exploration with the realities of Arctic conservation projects, Akey brings glory to the women she found in Svalbard devoting their lives to protecting the land. "The Arctic Smiles Now" is on view at Hillyer Art Space from November 3 – December 17, 2017.

This is what holiday shopping was meant to be: calm, friendly, local, and full of beautiful items. One day a year, fittingly the day after Thanksgiving, we reduce our commission on sales and mark down everything in the Brentwood Arts Exchange Fine Craft Store 20% - but still pay the artists the same as with a regular sale.

Support artists who are of course themselves also small businesses. Our Craft Store features unique, one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry, blown glass, ceramics, handbags, cards, and more. 10 am - 7 pm

The 2017 Prince George’s County Juried Exhibition

Attitudes are catalysts for new processes, and re-envisioned ways of making. To use any material, or even to make work that is ethereal, arises from widely varied practices, but always embodies the artist’s attitude about creating. Furthermore, to act with style and intention in creating articulates and shares the position of the artist. Pushing the boundaries of art informs not only making art but also seeing it. 5-8 pm
