I browsed through the topics to make sure there wasn't already a thread on this topic and I didn't see one. Please forgive me if this kinda stuff has already been posted
Even though I am new to the business aspect of photography, I have already come face to face with copyright issues and found that as an artist we need to know every little bit about our rights. I purchased a book called
Legal Guide for the Visual Artist by Tad Crawford. I am but a few chapters in, and I've already learned sooo much from it. I feel it is an essential read for anyone looking to get into the business.
Two Circulars that every artist should be familiar with are Circular 1, "Copyright Basics" (
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ01.pdf ) and Circular 2, "Publications of Copyright" (
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ02.pdf )
And if you're in the mood for more reading, all the PDF files can be found here:
http://www.copyright.gov/circs/I know for you seasoned artists this is all old news, but it never hurts to have a refresher. I was caught off guard when I was questioned about copyrights (a motorcycle racer claiming that I did not own the copyright to my photograph because the photo was of him). So, it would be good for any and all of us to have a pretty good grasp on the laws if we ever come up against a copyright issue.
