This November, graffiti artists, punk rockers, and a lobotomy patient or two will scale a scaffold set to present Walt Whitman High School’s imaginative interpretation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical thriller runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 19-21, at 7 pm in the school’s Daryl L. Shaw auditorium, located at 7100 Whittier Boulevard, Bethesda.
Director Christopher Gerken, a Tony nominee for excellence in theatre education, shifts the Sondheim musical from its traditional setting in Victorian England to the 1980s punk scene. The result is at once shocking and enchanting, as the bone-chilling classic score melds impeccably with the London punk/goth counterculture.
Tickets are $10 for students/general admission, $15 for adults/general admission, and $20 for reserved seats. Visit
