Canvas? Paper?
« on: August 05, 2007, 06:28:38 PM »
Where do your order your canvas?  Let's start a list here:

http://www.dickblick.com/categories/canvas/
http://www.pearlpaint.com/shop~ocID~9999~parentID~0~categoryID~9999.htm
http://www.primomart.com/product_info.php/cPath/4_7/products_id/51

Are there any really great sources that we should know about?

Most recently I ordered stretched canvasses from Dick Blick (with old Art Store labels), but I've also used Cheap Joe's for both canvas and paper (among other things).

I tend to buy in bulk online, but still often buy locally (Plaza, Utrecht, Pearl...) in smaller volume whatever is on sale.

I am impatient for online ordering of canvas- although it's hard to find bigger than 2 yard rolls elsewhere.

I go to Pearl at Baileys and schmooze with the people that work there until I find the "cool person that'll hook me up" and then I get 10 yards of medium-quality for about $3/yard.

Haven't checked lately but a couple of years ago I got two large rolls of canvas from Utrecht on 12th St.

They were 7' wide/tall and I think about 10 yards long.  Not cheap but reasonable.  They were out there for all the world to see, leaning against the wall near the stretcher pieces.

Did you see bigger there?  I've never been there but if they have bigger "height" canvas rolls i'd definitely make the drive!

I seem to remember that I did not get the tallest, but I don't remember for sure.  They might have had 8' or 10' rolls.  Don't know if the store ceilings are high enough for the largest rolls they have online (12').

You could call and see what they have in stock: 202-898-0555

By the way, they have discounts for some arts groups.  For example, I think DC Arts Center members get 20% off.

Oh yeah, about Michaels- They have the shittiest canvas I have ever bought in my life.  It's pre-primed (of course) and thin and absolute garbage.  I bought a roll out of desperation (for some ridiculous price), took it home and opened it...It's like painted paper.  Pure garbage.  Highly recommend against buying canvas there.  I've seen it rip while stretching, too.

Uh... I'd guess that would have more to do with the particular brand of canvas, than with the store.  Michaels sells the whole spectrum, from flimsy crap to portrait-grade linen.  Granted, the flimsy crap is generally the most readily available...

Uh, you must be talking about another "Michaels" because the five or so in my area in NoVA only sell one kind of canvas roll.  If you're talking pre-stretched then of course they sell different kinds, some which don't suck.

Michaels == Evil overpriced canned art store.  The Wal-Mart for art and craft supplies (except for the "savings").  Although A few times they've saved my ass so I would sort of miss them if they disappeared- then again there's A.C. Moore which is a notch better for a art-store-empire.

Ah!  I've only gotten the (decent) pre-stretched stuff there.  ...I like to steal the 40%-off coupons out of people's newspapers and go to several Michaelses in one fell swoop to stock up.

But yeah, Michaels is mainly geared toward potpouri-sniffing soccer moms who'd probably use "canvas" for tree skirts and toaster cozies.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.  :smt001
