jennifer beinhacker artomatic experience 2012
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:04:15 AM »
i am delighted to be here at aom again.  :smt004
my 4th aom.

i want to say a special thanks to all the folks that made aom 2012 possible...the folks who got us this amazing building, the board, chairs, co-chairs.....without all of your hard work we would not here getting ready to have the best aom ever!!!
and a very special thank you to jeann....one of the nicest people i know.

my first aom was at crystal city and i am so pleased to be back in this neighborhood again.

i did 2 volunteer shifts this week (wed/thursday) and today, at noon, is my 3rd shift.
i have been working the loading dock. i really enjoy being there....greeting all the excited newbie aomers and seeing friends from years past as everyone comes to install..

yesterday neal and helena (my bliss) came to blue tape my space in prep for painting tonite (an apricot color).
helena, 7 years old, is so happy with my space. it is near the peeps. she thinks i picked it especially for her so she can go to see the peeps all the time. she is a big peep devotee. and since she is so pleased that i did "this" "just for her"...i'll take the credit and the big hugs that went with her joy at being in peep-land :)

i like to exhibit new work at aom.

a while ago i was walking through my neighborhood on big bulk pickup day and saw some wonderful (round) wood). since i like to use found objects (and also recycle) when i make art, i took them to my studio.
they waited there for a while as i pondered what to do with them.
and then.....viola.......i knew what i wanted to create......mandalas for aom!

so....in the last 3 weeks i made 6 mandalas......a lot of intensive work (but great fun) in my studio.
helena who has been following the progress of all the mandalas said to me: " you are such an amazingly talented artist to make 6 mandalas in such a short time". how cute is that....she is my biggest fan :).

these photos can all be linked back to my flickr

                    mandala 1

mixed media on wood: dolls (some weathered in my garden), one wrapped in hospital casting material), acrylic paint, twine, nails, carpet tacks, beads, bone, shells, spider, doll heads, collaged paper. straight pins, safety pins

36" round X 5" depth

because i photographed it head on some of the pieces do not show up as clearly as  they do when you are actually looking at it.
the  color of some of the dolls is because i had  them in my garden and let sun, wind, rain,  snow age them.
and yes...i did rip off the heads!

                                     mandala 2

mixed media on wood: acrylic paint, doll hand, green doll head, marble, paper tags, stamps, carpet tacks

26" round X 6 " deep

                  mandala 3

mixed media on wood: acrylic paint, sewing factory bobbins, carpet tacks, collage paper, photograph, dolls, doll hands, sequins, buttons, ribbon, beads, fishing lure, shells

26" round X 4"

                              mandala 4

mixed media on wood: acrylic paint, jaw bones, doll body, doll heads, teeth, twine, carpet tacks

27" round X 6" deep

Hey Jennifer !!

Nice to see you started your "blog" early .... I see your art is still disturbingly enticing   :smt004

Looking forward to your art display and your stories ... I enjoy your stories. I remember the last one where you went to Africa (?) to that market place which sells skulls and animal parts. Crazy pics too !!!

Cheers !!

hello cynus-m-how nice to see you again. i am delighted you stopped by to say hello. i look forward to seeing you once the show opens.

and thanks also for your lovely words about my art...i am so pleased you find it still "disturbingly enticing"...that's exactly what i was going for :)

i'm glad you enjoyed (and remember!) my african trip.
i've done a fair amount of traveling since then. last year i went to morocco and spain. i posted about it in my regular artdc thread. it was quite an exciting adventure.

do come back and visit again. i enjoy talking with you.

see you at the aom opening!

yesterday, friday, i did another volunteer shift. i was lucky enough to get to work the loading dock again. worked with roy and amy...two very nice folks. got to see some friends (hi andy!) and meet new folks who are first timers at aom. their excitement was wonderful.

neal came at 3:30 and by my shift's end at 5 he had painted my wall (the apricot color looks fab...especially as i am fortunate enough to have a light fixture right overhead and it gives a warm glow to the color...just what i wanted), cleaned up, swept the floor around my space. he is a treasure.

since we were done with the painting so quickly we decided to go home and start bringing in some art.
but.........little did we know that arlington was sponsoring a 3k race from 6-8pm! so when we got back, at 6, lots of streets were blocked off, many folks racing around, police manning the streets...and the free after 4pm week days garage was jammed! we found one of the last few spaces and, instead of doing the loading dock, we walked my work through the garage to the loading dock.

hung two of the mandalas and then had a picnic dinner (sitting on the floor) in front of my art....and enjoyed "the view". LOL!

there were a few folks on 9 (my floor) painting their spaces so i got to meet some of my neighbors. but basically the place was empty. not a lot of folks came during my shift to start their install. i imagine the crush of folks will start today now that it's the weekend and folks are off work.

today will be a busy day for us. we still have to photograph 3 mandalas and then bring the remaining 4 mandalas to aom.
i think, unless it's raining (boo!) we'll skip the loading dock (i imagine it will be jammed), park in the garage and just make several trips carrying the work in.

so if all goes well i hope to have all my work hanging by today and then.....i will be finished installing and ready for the excitement of opening night  :smt004

my thought: i was talking with some folks yesterday who were debating: to paint their space or not. imo, i think painting your space is the way to go, even if it does add a little work to your install. it's nice to have a fresh clean space to hang on, it defines your space should others be hanging on the sides of you, i think it looks more "professional" to have a clean wall, and it says to the art loving public.......hey, come look at my work.
but..that is just my opinion.

yesterday, saturday, neal and i went to my space to finish hanging my art.
since we had already hung the two large mandalas friday night we where able to bring the remaining 4 in one car trip.
i wasn't  sure how crowded the loading dock/freight elevator would be (since this was the first weekend day of install) so we choose to street park and "walk in".
it was an easy hang. put up the 4 mandalas, my business card holder, the guest book comments holder, etc.
this was probably the easiest install of any of the 4 aoms i have been in.

there was some activity on the 9th floor...the peeps folks were painting the walls cheerful colors, people were laying out what to put on carl's wall (so sad), and a few other folks were painting their spaces.
i got to see some folks i haven't seen in a while and met some of my 9th floor neighbors.
all in all i didn't see much going on but perhaps on other floors it was busier and also maybe later in the day.

we took some photos of my space.
then off to the bakery for coffee, cake, hand holding  and looking at the photos we took.

a lovely install for me.

we will probably be returning today to aom to have a look around...we go even when i am done installing......aom is "addicting"  :smt004

                  my finished installation

Hi Jennifer - I think it's great that you install early, not only because you miss the last-minute craziness but because you serve as a positive and inspiring example to other artists.

I also agree about wall-painting - especially nice since nothing has to be repainted at the end this time :-)

Love the jawbones. :-)

we took helena to aom yesterday.
although her "expertise" at blue taping was very helpful for painting prep last week she hadn't seen my completed space.
once she pronounced my wall "cool" she ran right over to see the peeps. she liked watchng brian make the pedestals and is sooo looking forward to peeps landing on them soon!!!!

we looked at the wall for carl. helena has met carl many times, but doesn't quite remember his face. so i talked about carl to her and explained why he has a memorial wall, a porsche decal on his wall and reminded her that he is the guy that bought the assemblage that use to hang in her room (in my house)
once i told her that...she remembered him

this is the piece that carl bought (he also bought a second piece of mine at the last aom).
i hope the two pieces are in a good home....at his sister's house? because carl really liked them.

we took a tour on my floor, 9 and also 1, 8,10 and 11.
helena was quite excited to see art hanging, meet artists as they worked and interact with some of the art.
her opinions, how she views art, what appeals to her..and what doesn't..... are quite refreshing to listen to. she tells us more than just "i like or i don't"...she carefully explains what about each piece appeals to her and likened some work to "the impressionists".....she is quite familiar with impressionist painting.
she enjoyed reading the large book installation, seeing the smashed television and  she wondered why there were so many walls painted grey and black.....at 7 y/o she is into color!

although there was not quite a lot of  activity, we could see that aom is getting ready! it is always so exciting to see the show grow from the ground up.

the joy of having a child....life is fresh, new, uninhibited, etc when seen through their eyes....

when we were waiting for the elevator helena saw the announcement asking for "teachers" to run kid's art class at aom. she became quite delighted and wants to be signed up.
i imagine all that good "kid's classes" info will be posted once it's set up.

hi jesse-since you asked: neal and i to go to aom sunday to repaint part of my wall. the woman to the left of me put duct tape on my wall when she painted hers and of course took some of my freshly painted wall off when she too the duct tape down.
at least it was an easy fix.

on the plus side: i got to meet the artist to my right...lorenzo and michael. very nice guys. i saw lisa r...a wonderful woman. did a quick tour of 3 to look at andy's work.
saw some other folks...tracey, jeann, barry and his two adorable girls, etc.
many more artists there getting there spaces ready.
it will be a great show i think!

Oy.  Naughty neighbors with duct tape.  I've been using frog tape with good luck for personal projects....  It sounds like the event is coming together nicely.  I'm looking forward to the receptions.
