Pottery studios in No.Va.
« on: October 10, 2004, 05:56:54 PM »
Does anyone know if a good public pottery studio in the No.Va. area that gives lessons? I've taken classes at Wakefield Rec Center in Annandale. The lab is pretty big, and relies on volunteers to man it. I'd like to go somewhere that offers lengthier lessons. I know that the Reston Community Center gives lessons, but for only about 8 weeks at a time. Great Falls Art Center also gives classes.

I'd like to know if anyone has taken classes at any of these places and if you liked the facilty, teachers, etc. Thanks.

Hey!  Check out the "Classes, Etc." that's through Fairfax County:

http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/DIS/OACE/LE/art/finec.htm#10134

This particular course is on a Saturday for 8 weeks at Creative Clay Studios.

NOVA's Alexandria campus offers pottery, but it's a graded class, I think.

You might want to try calling some of the pottery places and see if they have any recommendations.  Clay Cafe Studios, Creative Clay, etc.

I took ceramics classes when I was really little, it was fun.  That was in Richmond.  There doesn't seem to be much around here, which sucks.

Try Capitol Hill Arts Workshop:

It's not in NoVa, but they might have what you are looking for...

I would swear Renee had a webpage, but I can't find it. At any rate, Clay Queen Pottery in DelRay (Alexandria) is great. Here's the basic info:

Maybe this is obvious, but the Art League School @ Torpedo Factory has ceramics classes.

I've never taken a ceramics class there (or at all ;) ), but I took an intro metal sculpture class with the Art League that was excellent!

We have a really cool community at Creative Clay Studios.  There are resident artists, associates, great teachers, and lots of happy students.  It's a fun place to learn and grow as a potter, either using the wheel or handbuilding.  Check out the website or drop by.  There is also a retail store with clay, tools, and supplies.

We also took classes at Wakefield, a good place to start.
Lee Arts Center offers good workshops.  So does Creative Clay.
These are the places we've been to personally.
We loved Creative Clay so much that we bought it... now we're happy and poor!

Cheers,
