i received a letter from the benefactor in today's mail:

the benefactor wrote:

your art is brilliant and makes me feel alive.
if i was rich i would buy it all.
i wish i could contribute a million dollars to your efforts.
you deserve it.

and enclosed was $500 monopoly money.

after the last aom the benefactor and i exchanged several emails...delightful.
nice to be in touch again  :smt004

the benefactor mentioned art enables in some other letters to aom artists.
a wonderful organization and group of people.
actually when stephanie was still living here i helped curate/judge a show at art enables. it was a wonderful experience  :smt004

MEET THE ARTIST night, 2 june

meet the artist night is one of the exciting happenings at aom....a chance for the art loving public to see great art and talk with the aom creative artists.
the siren call of "free food"  :smt016 is a big attraction (LOL)  , but....getting a chance to talk with artists is of course the main draw to this event.

since my first aom, 2008, i have always gone to meet the artist night with my two gal pals angela and dorothy. dorothy could not make it this year..but angela was delighted to join me.

after putting out my chocolates (a big hit with all the folks looking at the peeps.....especially the kids) , getting a glass of wine, reading my comment book, etc, i was ready for "my public".

i had quite number of folks stopping by to see my mandalas, ask questions about what a "mandala is", what is the meaning of my mandalas, and the top number one question "were any barbie dolls harmed". i assured folks that no barbies were harmed...even when their heads were ripped off!

of course the kids loved the dolls, etc and did not find my plastered, "bloody", headless, pins in their heads, etc etc,  dolls "scarey". and many women could relate and shared stories of when they too ripped the heads off their barbies. one woman remembers having an entire attic filed with headless barbies.

there were several people who seemed possibly interested in acquiring one of my mandalas and took my business card and contact information.
we shall see. many folks do not totally "get it" when it comes to we artists and the pricing of our work. it is not always understood the time, effort, creativity, hard work, etc that goes into creating an art piece..... all of this is reflected in the art.....but also in the price.
would be delightful for me if someone bought a mandala...but if not....i am quite happy to bring them home at show's end and hang them in my house.....i am really really enormously pleased with how they turned out and will enjoy seeing them home again.

at 9:40 pm, after  meet the artist night ended (at 9pm, though the crowds kept coming), and fortified with our second red wine, angela and i wandered the 11th, 10th & 8th floors (she did the 9th..my floor.....while i was being "met"...ha!). we also did some stages...dance and really mellow jazz.

a crush at the elevators convinced us to take the stairs....good choice as i ran into many aom friends.......paivi.....whom i haven't seen in ages (i was so happy to see her again and catch up. she looked wonderful), rob lindsey, matt and ellyn, michele, tracey lee (and her very talented daughter)...i know there were others but can't quite remember.....

matt and i ran into each other several times after that and had a very productive talk about the future of art festivals in the DC area. matt opined that the festivals  (like adams-morgan) will not be as numerous in this area due to $$$$$$ shortage. he is interested in gathering a group of artists to see what can be done to keep festivals/street fairs, etc alive. although i do not do festivals as my art does not lend itself to that milieu, i told him i was interested in working with him and brain storming what can be done.

stopped by to thank roger from helena for the sunflower plants he gave her...and to give the dinosaur a hug....oops...i mean give roger a hug  :smt082.

ran into jeanan in the lobby. she definitely gets my vote as one of the all time nicest aom "head honcho" folks i have met in my four times of being an aom-er....... always smiling, patient, willing to answer all my "silly" questions. she is a delight!
as are also, imo, tracey lee and rebecca gordon and nancy tretick......oh...i guess i should add jim..or else he might put the heads back on my headless barbies.  :woot:

i know i met many other fellow aom-ers and if i forgot to mention your name.....so sorry .....blame it on the wine.
jump on this thread and say...hey...i saw you !!!!!!

i stopped into the masks room of gary irby (whom i had written about after my last date night with neal) and we chatted about his amazing masks.
also went into the room of liz lescault (also written about my me). she was not there but her "roommate", john the sound guy, was. small world.....john and liz were the very first folks i helped at the loading dock my first aom volunteer shift. i hadn't realized this when i went into their room thursday so i was glad i returned again. john is a very cool guy.

made some new friends, mo fogerty and her mom, trisha (next to me on 9), and of course always have a great time with michael shiffer and lorenzo (who have the space next to me).

the best part for me, of meet the artist night, is that so many of my aom friends are there and i can get a chance to say hello.
aom is like a family....a reunion where we get together every few years.....

since the building is so big i know i didn't get a chance to see everyone that was there.
i am looking forward to the zombie prom where we will all be gathered in one space/place......i am smiling just thinking of seeing you all  :smt004

                                                DATE NIGHT         thursday 7 june

another date night for neal and i.
of course went to my space, read some comments, replaced business cards, said hello to michael, lorenzo, rebecca and lisa.

then off to 10th floor for our dinner, relaxing, listening to opera that was coming from one of the installation spaces.

a quick stop at the office to do some chatting with folks and also to look at the visitor's stats (which are posted on a paper there).
meet the artist night certainly brought it's share of visitors.....more even than opening night.
as far as i can tell each day brings its fair share of art loving patrons to see aromatic. because it is such a big building it isn't always that noticeable (depending on the day of the week) how many folks are coming through...but...the numbers seem to me to be ok!!!

although we had seen parts of the third floor during installation we had not seen the completed floor. had an enjoyable tour viewing a variety of art, media and styles of creating.

when we entered one room and looked out the window we saw our parked car ( a red nissan xterra). we are such "goofs"....we just had to take a picture!!!!

although we had also done the second floor we took another turn there.

on the first floor we realized that we had not walked through bus boys and poets (the cafe was closed) to see the art beyond the cafe.
finally found jeanan's space...enjoyed her "out door tenting"....especially as neal, helena and i are leaving 21 june for the southwest to go camping and hiking.
helena has never been there (though neal & i have camped there a gazillion times)....and she has never tent camped! we are all so excited to be having this adventure together.
neal and i have been telling her about the beauty of the USA, the 4 corners area, the national parks, amazing rocks, etc. for years and sharing all our photos and fun happenings with her...and now....we get to do it with her.....life is so wonderful with helena in it.  :smt004

on the way back to the car we stopped to see a street hockey game....held in a roped off parking lot. reminded us of our growing up in new york where every one played in the streets.

have a photo of neal and i to attach but keep getting the error message. the photo is the correct small size  but the artdc keeps saying it is 600 kb bigger than it is and won't post it.

frustrating.
i'll see if i can figure out the problem.  :headonwall:
meanwhile will try to post the other photos but in my experience once i get the error message nothing works

thanks!

we have been doing "date night" since my first aom (2007).
we are great believers in "traditions" and this is one of our faves.
and....it nice to have a special night where life's cares fall away and we are together.....

there is so much to see at every aom.
and the only way to do the art (and artists that created) justice is to do it a floor or two at a time. this way we can really concentrate and absorb all  we are seeing.
doing aom in one fell swoop gives me "museum head".  :smt073

sent neal and email about my trouble attaching the photos, even though they are the "correct" sis.
he suggested changing the size ever so slightly.
i'll try that and see if it works.

so hopefully here are the date night photos i just wrote about  :smt112

neal is sooooooo smart. it worked!

helena at artomatic       friday 8 june

another helena day at aom .
we always get an awesome street parking space when we take helena to aom. she has good parking karma!
made our usual first stop at the bakery for coffee, lemonade and a shared fudge brownie.

we had told helena about rob lindsey's pinball machine so off to 11 to see it. helena had a great time playing pinball. she had never played it before ( a sheltered life  :iconlol: ). actually she did quite well....now we have to look for a penny arcade so she can continue her "pinball career"!

we also made a stop at michael's space. helena was entranced by the black lights and she glowed in the dark.....

also stopped at matt & ellyn's space.......and various other rooms also.

then to the aom store where helena bought 3 packages of peeps. she is quite excited to make her own peep diorama. she already has an idea.....ballet peeps....complete with a tutus, a bar and mirrors. helena has been taking ballet lessons since she was quite small and really loves it. in fact her (third) recital is this sunday. of course neal and i go....and the minute she steps on stage...i start crying......i don't even have the words to tell you what joy this little girl brings to my (and everyone else) life...she is my bliss!!!!!!

we had to make a quick visit as we had lots to do at home......we are going camping/hiking to the southwest (leaving 21 june) and we had lots of hiking clothes to try on at home. she is such an "rei" girl!!!!!!

we had forgotten our camera so neal took photos with his ipad...i have no idea what he did...but when we viewed them at home.....he had taken movies and not still photos. so no photo of helena glowing in black light. we'll have to go back and do it again.

                                           zombie prom

i went to the zombie prom.

at the last aom the zombie prom was organized by sean (he now lives in chicago). it was a huge success. many many many aom artists and board members and chairs and co-chairs of the aom committees attended. all were wonderfully costumed as zombies. the tables were laden with food that we all bought to share. there was music, laughter and much hugging of friends.

so...it was with much anticipation that i went to this year's zombie prom.
i hoped that i would be able to see my many aom artist friends that i have not managed to see so far this year.
one of the best parts of aom, for me, is seeing my friends. and with such a big building this year it is often hard to see anyone, even if many are in the building at the same time.

this year's zombie prom was a different kind of event. it was listed on the aom website and open to all...artists and the public. i find not too much wrong with that. at the last zombie prom of course the art loving public walked by and were very welcome to join in.
this year it seemed that the majority of folks attending was the art loving public and not the aom artists. i counted only a handful of artists that i knew.
this year the prom was a more scheduled event. there was first a poetry reading/strip tease. i looked at it briefly as it didn't interest me much.
once it was over mostly all the folks got up and left and the room became rather empty.

it's not that there was anything wrong with how this zombie prom was organized...it just was not what i had expected or hoped for.......seeing aom artists. i have no idea why no artists  attended (except for a few folks). maybe they came after i left????

if i had known in advance that this was how the zombie prom would be i wouldn't have attended.
it was a disappointment to me, given what i had hoped for....seeing my aom artist friends.

when i left at 9 pm-ish the stat clicker had 1000 folks since 5:30 (that also counted the artists and volunteers). i am sure more folks came after i left.

Yeah, it did get rather quiet in there after the striptease was over. I had fun hanging out for a little while, and talked with a couple of other people who also turned out to be artists from the 4th floor like me - it was nice to put a face, even a zombie one, to the art. :) But we still didn't stay as long as I thought we might since it thinned out that much.

But you got a good picture of me. In the red and black. The other zombie in the picture (I'm bad with names) is another 4th floor artist (with the Tardis pillar, for those who've been there). And your last photo is my friend Jen, who helped me in the Marketplace yesterday.

yeah, i do agree with jennifer about zombie prom. while it was fun to get dressed up and see / meet some people there (it was great getting to chat with jennifer and paivi), it just didn't have that fun vibe that the '09 zombie prom had. i liked when the focus was on the artist zombies, and getting more of a chance to admire each others' costumes and meet new people. after the burlesque (which is also not exactly my scene), most of the people took off and there was only a small group of us left. a few people i met were disappointed because some of the things advertised (human piņata was the one i kept hearing about) never happened. maybe it was an organizational thing that was overlooked that could have helped move things along into the more social aspect of the event?

in any case, i did get to wear my zombie attire so it wasn't a total loss. ;)

I didn't attend the zombie prom for a couple of reasons. 1) I'm just not into the whole zombie craze that has exploded. And could care less about attending such an event. 2) After attending AOM every weekend for various Artist Socials / Meet the Artist, etc I was pooped and figured I was due for a break.

Glad you still enjoyed yourself Jennifer!

the biggest benefit of AOM in my opinion, even more so than having an opportunity to show my art, is to meet new people and to see old friends. i have a feeling it is the same for jennifer and that is where most of her disappointment has come from. my last 3 AOMs have resulted in numerous connections and friends, lots of exhibit opportunities, and a chance to catch up with people who i don't see anywhere else (or who i really like and just don't get to see enough of). i know i've been pretty busy this year and as a result have not been to as many of the events like in past years but i have gone out at least once a week. my AOM #4 is not over yet so there's still time (i'm looking forward to the sketch crawl this saturday!), but the vibe this year is different.
