we took helena to aom yesterday. she was clamoring to see if there were any peeps as all she has seen so far was the pedestals....and joy of joys.....some of the peeps were there. helena loved all the peeps and now wants to make her own "peep art". she says using them in art is better than eating them because they are not a healthy food !.

we also put my photo up on the grid.
what a great idea the grid is....kudos to those that thought of doing that. a fun ( and very clever) way for folks to find the artists.
i decided to use my "avatar" (same one i have on my business cards and use for artdc/aom forums) as many folks already know it.
i wrote (on it) that i was "near the peeps" instead of floor 9 SW section 7 because i thought that might be more recognizable as "directions for finding me".

jim and nancy were there putting up his photographs. he's in a room very near me. he showed me a photo he had taken of carl at the aom zombie prom. it is so "mr peeps". an amazing photo....one of the best that jim has done..imo.
i really liked seeing it...and it made me miss carl even more.

once we were able to tear helena away from the peeps we did some wandering.
ended up on floor 3. lots of good art there. saw a few fabulous installations. one of my favorite's (i am sorry i don't remember the artist's name) is a room/repository of discarded papers...papers, cards, etc that folks save and can't bear to part with...but eventually do. helena enjoyed reading some of the cards/papers and is already thinking of what she can bring to add to the room.
we also met jane, a found-object mosaic artist. she is planning on have two classes where folks can "make art" using concrete bowls and objects. helena hopes to take part in her class.
nice that there are so many hands-on activities for kids.

i am very impressed with many of the 3d installations i have seen thus far. quite exciting that this building has so many really open spaces that lend themselves to 3D art.

although many of the walls/spaces were "finished" , there was a lot of empty space still...waiting for the artists to come and install. since installation ends this weekend i am sure the building will be humming with feverish activity........

and then.....opening night 18 may  :smt004

Sure.  Why not.  But the lock down is on the checkbook.  I say to the world, buy Jennifer's art while you can still afford it.  I'm sure I'll be kicking myself later for not buying now.

                                       ARTOMATIC OPENING NIGHT

neal and i arrived around 6:15.
there was quite a crowd of excited folks waiting to enter and see.......aom !

i must start out by saying how mega impressed neal and i were with the building. although we had come during installation many times, to install, and to see the progress...and for helena to keep checking the peeps....we had not seen it finished and ready to open.

the folks who worked on getting the building ready did a bang up super job. everything looked so professional..the columns were nicely painted, most of the carpets were clean, the stages looked great, the grafetti walls looked awesome, the lobby was very inviting with art all around, the lounge areas looked very comfortable for folks to sit, chat and talk art, the bars were super, the bus boys & poets cafe was a delightful treat....i could go on and on with how mega impressed we were.

many kudos to all the hard working folks who made it all possible.....

i had received, at home, flowers from a friend (living in north carolina) for opening night and decided to bring them to my space.  it was a huge bouquet of exotic flowers in a very very heavy glass vase..but the speedy elevator situation made bringing them up to the 9th floor very do-able.

a delightful surprise was waiting for me when i arrived at my space ( 9th floor near the peeps) at aom opening night.

i had been brashed.
it is always an honor and a pleasure to receive a brash poem.
they are so thoughtfully written...and relevant to each artist.

here is my brash poem:

            wager
to jennifer beinhacker's art

honey, i'd spin my fortune on your wheel, any day, any time
with the same sort of zeal
i'd fling into dancing but not the same chancing
i'd expend for money or anything romancing
short of rhyme.

did anyone else get brashed..or am i the first?
remember...brash's poem are his/her property and are copywritted.

thank you brash   :smt004

david, christine and helena came to the opening, as did my friends, gail and bob.
of course we had to do the peeps and then toured some of the floors, mostly 10,and 11 and 1 as there was so much to see on each floor.
after they all left neal and i continued our visiting the floors.
of course we'll have to return again and again and slowly do each floor so we can see what is there.
we also enjoyed 3 musical performances.....and before the performance started there was some really nice music playing on the loudspeaker (on 10) and i got to "slow dance" with carlos....that man can dance!!!!!!!!!

one of the biggest pleasure of aom, for me, is seeing my "aom family" and i was able to share hugs with many friends....though i am sure that there were so many other folks i didn't get to see given the huge space of many floors.
but meet the artist night, artist socials and the zombie prom await and i am sure i will see more folks then.

i  am quite pleased with how my space and the mandalas look and received many compliments and questions about my art. always rewarding to talk to folks about my work.
as i think i mentioned in a previous posting, i created theses 6 mandalas for aom in about 3 weeks.

we saw many interesting 2 d and 3 d spaces and i am looking forward to taking another look.
it is so wonderful that our tri-state area has so many brilliant artists.
seeing what is created is fascinating...a peek into the mind of each artist.

another helena at aom day.....our usual thursday fun....

we found  a street parking space (we always have great parking karma when we go with helena and found a metered space near aom front door..without having to pay the $20 for parking garage).

ran into nancy and jim who were on their way to lunch...and we were going to the bakery for coffee and a brownie...so we all happily walked together.
saw george along the way and as we were all going in the opposite direction from aom we teased him that aom had moved!!!

first stop......the 9th floor to see my space, replenish my business cards, read my comment book (hi lorenzo!) and add water to my flowers.

helena had brought a quarter to use at michael schiffer's space.  helena happily put in her quarter to buy some seeds..but alas...all she got was a top....so we gave her another quarter and it worked.
she bought the quarter from home in a plastic bag just to do this.
michael wasn't there for her to use his computer and plant her seed. next time.......!

we also went in, again, to lilian bloom's room to see her hommage. fabulous work and very moving.....

since there is so much to see at aom and a 7 year old can only absorb so much or it becomes meaningless if we do many floors at a time we choose to see the 2nd floor. we 3 had been there before during installation. now the floor is completely installed  so we were able to see all the work.

there is much of excitement to see on 2 and we totally enjoyed our time there.

two artists that stood out for us are:

1. donald edwards....his installation of red objects is fabulous! and i especially liked the baby doll body with the wire cage filled with objects that he had hanging on his wall.
we had seen the wall painted but empty during install.....and what a treat to see it finished.

2.room of burnt offering artists.....her installation of burnt kiln fire pots was breathtaking....like coming upon a wonderful archeological dig of times past

as were were wandering we kept hearing a "sawing/hammering nose". and out from a room popped brian. he invited us into his wood workshop and proudly showed off the rolling beer/wine cart he had just finished (for aom). his workshop was a delightful installation in itself...and smelled deliciously of saw dust. helena was quite intrigued and talked with brian about how he had put the cart together.
brian gave helena a close up view of the cart by putting her in ti. she said that doing that was "cool but she was too young to drink"!

finishing our 2nd floor wandering.......we will bring helena back again and see more.
helena looooooves aom and i looooove sharing it with her  :smt004

when my son david was a boy we didn't have many opportunities to dress in "mother/son" clothes  :iconlol:
but........when we lived in europe.....and even after we returned to the states.....i would buy him kicker's shoes ( a french brand of shoe). i worked as a volunteer in the art room of his school, burgendy farm country day school. on those days we would wear coveralls, matching socks, shirt and our kicker's shoes. i am sure he just loved having his mom dress like him!!!!!

i saved my kicker's shoes...thinking maybe david would have a boy and we could do the same....but........he had helena (lucky us...she is so precious)....and she loves kicker's shoes (especially the ones in pink/purple/orange). she has worn out that pair but she does have the blue ones...just like her dad!

she knew we were going to aom and asked if i could wear my kicker's so we could be "twins".  :smt004

ever since my first aom (2007) neal and i , aside from going countless times for install, opening night, meet the artist, tours, socials etc, have "date night".
there is so much to see at aom...and to really see and absorb what is there, it has to be done slowly....floor by floor...a few floors at a time.

we have a picnic dinner, relax, and then pick two floors to explore.

we always start ( and end) at my floor ( 9 ).......just to see what is in my comment book, replenish business cards, etc.

last night we chose 4 and 7 and looked into every nook and cranny at all there was to see.
saw some films also in the carl cordell theater. aptly named as carl adored movies and had a huge collection of films.

saw barry and had an enjoyable aom conversation with him...a really nice guy....as is his wife, whom we ran into in the aom store....they are selling peeps there.....we will take helena thursday to buy some as she wants to make her own peep assemblage.

because we had come early-ish it was not too crowded...but later on... folks started arriving.

we'll return next week for our usual thursday helena day....and also for another "date night"  :smt004

Hello Everyone-  Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!  I would like to take the opportunity to thank any of you who have served, are serving, or belong to a family in which someone has served our country.  I thank not only those who have served, but also the families of those who have served.  The sacrifice you make/made daily is not nor has ever been a small one, I know that, I honor that and I thank you for that.  Know that you are remembered by neal and i, and that those who are no longer with us,  for such a selfless sacrifice, are remembered.  A slow, deliberate, pride filled, sincere, grateful salute to all of you!

and a special thanks to my dad, a WW 11 navy man...and to neal.....a retired army man.

                                      DATE NIGHT

thursday 31 may

usually neal & i bring helena to aom on thusdays. but she had a friend's recital to go to. so we decided to switch our date night to thursday and hopefully bring her to aom friday.

we made our usual first stop at my space to read my comment book.......i like the "creepy"  ( :smt081 ) that someone wrote. also replenished my business cards.

then off to have our dinner. we decided to eat on 9. the blow up couches and chairs that aom got for the lounges are really cool and make for relaxing, unwinding from the day, catching up on all going on, etc.

a visitor to aom decided to join us...he was a tad shy about talking to us but since i kept talking to him he became a little "braver". he is a fellow artist named tony, though not in this year's aom. he showed us his work..caricatures. he said he wasn't in this aom because he didn't feel ready. i encouraged him to definitely be in the next aom. i think he will enjoy it.

although we had visited the 11the floor during installation ( not everything up then) and opening night ( crowded), we decided to do a more thorough visit. easier to go through the warren of rooms when the floor was more empty early thursday evening.

when we got off the elevator we ran into tariq....we had met he and his wife at national ballpark aom. a really nice guy and fine artist. we went to look at his space and enjoyed not just his art, but catching up on all that had been happening, relaxing on his leather couch (he has an entire room to himself), learning how he did what he is showing this aom, etc.
i recommend visiting him...once you met him...you will want to be his friend :).

the other times we had been on the 11th floor we found it a tad confusing and got lost. but this time it was easier (maybe because there were less people?) and we were able to see everything shown there.

of course we love the art of matt, elleyn and michael.

we also liked the work of gary irby .........amazing folk masks.
and.... liz lescault.....organic clay sculptures that were quite exceptional to look at.

we had a great time playing rob lindsays' pinball machine and although neal bragged that he was good at it....ha! i made a higher score than him.

popped into barry's room and had fun waving to barry on the cameras.

roger..of sunflower fame.... had left several plants for helena at his space. so we went down to 10 to get them.
luckily roger was there so we mugged in front of the dinosaur.
roger gave helena sunflowers last aom and she was thrilled. i know she will be delighted to put these new ones in her garden.

while on 10 we took a tasty look into rebecca's "bacon room".....yummy.

neal has a friend, a fellow teacher, emily shepard, who is on 1. so of course we made a special trip to see her work.

we also saw open mike night (they had good cookies to share) and music on 10.

it was still a bit early in the evening so not big crowds. but there were folks coming in as we were leaving so i am sure the place filled up as the evening went on.
