Wow - thank you for looking.  That painting went unseen by anyone but my family and me for a long long time.

Cheryl - I can't think of a better home for the painting from the auction.  I'm honored.  I only regret it couldn't have been bigger, but I cheated the size constraint a little as it was.

Mr. Shooter - Thanks for the link - I just fell in love with that Chuck Close woodcut.  Never thought of him as an influence until now, despite his use of grids.  We both painted those in the same year, too.  I saw a thumbprint portrait of his at the Smithsonian some years ago.  No grid.  Don't know if it was part of the permanent collection or not.  It was mind-blowingly  beautiful.  You could learn something from it at any distance you viewed it.

Sean - Your comment means more to me than I am comfortable revealing here.  Thank you.

Jesse - This is one of the paintings I told you about from my period of fascination with The Human Genome Project.  I wanted it to look almost like an alphabet written in a textural language.

Jennifer - This one is old now.  It was hugely significant for me at the time, though.  I think some of what is important to me about this painting is still present in my current methods.  I just like to paint a lot bigger now, instead of confining my expression to one little 6" x 6" square at a time.  I should post some of the other grid paintings I did during that time.  They were very different from my current work.  I'm going to try to do that tonight.

Hey Jeannette -  Thank you for looking and for your compliment (especially for saying "freakin").

I wish I had the space to paint at least 4' x 6' all the time!  I have to go check out some more Jasper Johns.  The only things that spring to mind are bulls-eyes (like targets) and large gold numeral 5's!

Hi Lisa - You are pretty good at seeing!

I'll probably regret this, but here's another from that time period.

Oh, evmarinucci,
I am impressed by a ton of deep and intriguing colors in your paintings.
I have to scrutinize it.

Thanks for looking, Quan - nice to hear from you.

These paintings are from 2002.  I think these older paintings of mine are a bit undisciplined, but there are qualities about them that I like, such as the colors!

I really like the grid paintings, they remind me of quilts.  :smt001

What does finish mean?
How do you know it's not finished? Maybe it is?
What still needs to be done to it? A reshuffle of the cards perhaps?

Hahaha!  Yeah, I can see that I'd probably be the only one who'd know if it was finished or not - it's so busy!

But one of the squares has pages from Steinbeck's The Pearl - the one where the baby gets stung by a scorpion.  I intended to superimpose a black silhouette of a scorpion over that (just drawn with ink).  Also, a couple of the mini paintings are just light washes of color that needed to be strengthened and given a little dimension.  Here's a detail so you can see what I mean.

I just noticed - you can't really tell from this detail shot that the paint is a bit weak in a couple places.  But in person you (I) can tell.

Ev, nobody would know that but you!!!
I also noticed the shell-like swirl in the upper left...  maybe a subconscious precursor to your newest shell painting projects?

Ev is recovering.  Ev is back, baby.  Ev is cancer free.

Here is another painting from the before time.  The concept is patterns from nature, the big bang, and a world teeming with life.

Bang!
