"puttering" ( a way of saying in there and moving things around on my work table)....in my studio. cleared off my work table of africa bits and pieces (i keep getting distracted by africa...oh i have the "i want to go back" blues real bad) and now have a clean surface on which to work, hung some mini billboard posters (that i bought or tore off the walls) in,yes, africa, threw out some old brushes, put some jaw bones and pieces of rock out in my garden that i brought back from....yes......africa........

hmmmm........there seems to be a (slight) obsessional theme thing going on here........guess i need to get back to my studio and..........

film as art.......i'm sure all of you would agree that the definition of "art" includes film. it is quite amazing to think of how, in the blink of an eye, time-wise, the film world has gone from "silent films" to the myriad number of fine films we see today around the world.

i love going to the movies! unfortuantely nowadays many films are viewed by dvd rental (or shrunk for  the "small screen"......tv.) and the experience of going to the movies, sitting in the dark, the opening scene begins......the experience of watching the film within your own mind and in the company of others (both known to you, or strangers in the next seat) is being lost. the magical thing that happens when you lose yourself to the "silver screen" is disappearing......

that being said...neal and i went to the movies today. we saw the new woody allen film...."vicky christina barcelona".  an enjoyable experience..the "old" woody is back.....even though the film is set in barcelona it is a new york film. one could hear woody talking through his characters, especially the character of vicky. she even had his intonation and speech pattern down pat. neal and i, as new yorkers, quite enjoyed this. it was like being home again. though we  feel this film was not quite in league with wood's early films (which to my mind are classic art pieces and should be seen over and over and savored with each viewing) it was nevertheless worth going to. also quite enjoyable, and perhaps the best part (for me) and also the part that "stretched" woody to go outside his new york roots were the scenes with javier bardem and penelope cruz.........the fast paced spanish dialogue, the excellent acting, the fire and ice between the two characters...worth the price of admission.

anyone else see this film? what did you think?

friday went to another "monster art" truck show meeting. several folks there, some new to me. nice to see everyone. henrik (artoutlet) gave us an update on how the "put together" for the show is progressing. the space for maryland is set and henrik et al are busy working on the arlington space. henrik has several leads and will be checking them all out this week. also he and jesse will be checking on the uhaul rental, though rob  has a lead on "free" truck(s). go rob!!!!!! the walls ( for hanging the art) will be built in about two weeks. we sat outside java hut and enjoyed the summer's ever while drinking coffee and talking the show over. after a while the group got thirsty and headed off for a beer at galaxy. henrik said his new internet site should be up and running and registration should be next weekend. there will be another meeting next friday. more details can be found on henrik's artoutlet topic on  artdc.

i know it's not "art" related..but it is people related....just heard that gustav is a catergory 4 hurricane and may become a cat 5. OMG. if it hit new orleans as a category 5 the city is done for! neal & i were in LA. and new orleans several years ago on a camping trip. we went to LA. specifically so i could dance......zydeco and cajun dancing. i danced in a bowling alley (yup they had a band there) also on the stage of a radio show, etc. what great fun. we also did alot of voudou, which i really like. went to a voudou temple and the priestess there took a liking to me and gave me one of her "dolls in a ( whiskey) bottle". i have it sitting on my dining room shelf. when katerina hit 3 years ago the temple drowned. i probably have the only surviving thing from the temple. i sure hope this beautiful city is ok.

film week! two films in 5 days!
today neal and i went to see the just opened movie "frozen river"........a gem of a film dealing with many issues, among them the relationship between the two women protagonists and the lives they lead and how they cope with their life, their children, the extremes one "may" go to to just make it..........there are so many folks in the united states leading lives of quiet desperation.....it concerns me that our two candidates for the presidency haven't a clue as to what is really going on in the u.s. with so many people.........maybe they should see this film.
i recommend it....yes it is dark, depressing, disturbing..... the ending of the film does hold out a glimmer of hope that if one perserves (even while breaking the law) one can "make it"......more or less.
if any of you see it, let me know what you think.

I'm wondering what that is next to the person sitting on the wall.  It looks like a Tinkertoy model of molecule.  Or, being at the Niger River in Mali, perhaps it's something exotic that I can't even imagine.  Or maybe a dice cage from a local casino?

hey tom- you're right. it is hard to tell. it's a boy and his bicycle.......i thought that made a good composition......nature and man.

i really need to learn how to post a larger picture like you all do. i had asked jesse awhile ago and he sent me "instructions" on "how to" but my computer ate them and i'm stuck with the smaller pictures using the "browse". which by the way took me two years to master! i am so computer challenged! but i am pleased that at least i can do that much. if anyone can sent me, on this thread, how you put larger pictures on your postings, i'd appreciate it. but...keep it simple so i can follow it....computer know how mystifies me.  txs.

jesse-glad you liked the pix. it is pretty! i am so pleased that i was able to get this beautiful image. sunsets/rises are so magnificent.

hey raquel-txs for the kind words. i'm so pleased you like my mali sunset.

yes, i hope to post more africa adventure pictures (and if i can ever learn how.....in a larger size!). i posted 4 pix (of the fetish market) on page one of this thread (in case you didn't see those). i really like voudou (an official religion in benin), as those of you familiar with my art work can probably tell.

it pays to have business cards at artomatic! i had almost 700 of my business cards taken by art loving patrons at artomatic........alot of cards!. and, it paid off as i received a message on my website in june from a woman  (the below mentioned erika) who had taken one of my cards, went on my website and saw two pieces of my art that she liked. after we emailed back and forth ( i emailed her larger pix of the two pieces then she could see on my website), she decided which art piece suited her best and then made a studio visit to see the piece.
it is, of course, always exciting to sell an art piece......and equally exciting to have an art loving patron peruse my website in search of "art to purchase". added to this is the joy (for an artist) of having a studio visit from an art loving patron. since i am surrounded 24/7 by my art, it is ( artistically) stimulating for me to see it "anew" through different eyes.
she was very excited to come to my studio, see where i make my art, see her new art piece............all in all a very satisfying time for us both.

this past saturday, 30 august, erika returned to take her art piece home. we had a really nice visit, talking art, travel, etc. i am pleased to have a new friend (erika is also an artist) and know that my art piece has found a loving home.

this is the art piece she purchased. "white box series 7".

That's so wonderful that the cards mixed with the internet led to a purchase of your work.  Very cool.  Artomatic continues to be an amazing outlet for art!  Congratulations!

hey there (sorry i don't know your name...bill i think?)-just looked at your gallery. looooooove your work. totally crazy!

we really like to travel...the more adventurous the trip, the happier we are......we're throwbacks to the age of the "grand tour"......the more exciting the journey the more, we feel we've experienced the countries we go to. we've been all over europe (having lived there twice, for many years), central america, se asia and now africa. we're thinking of next trekking nepal and buthan and taking the mongolian express to beijing.......or a slow boat down the amazon. we'll see...

i tried to post some more pix from africa but can't get them sent..not sure if it's the artdc site or my computer. i'll try again later.
