Dreams and artists...what's more natural? Or more better? Head Cinema is a natural and more better US (Art Outlet)/German (Der Kunstladen , The Art Shop) artists' swap meet showcasing German and US artists' explorations of dreams and dreaming. Computer Geeks DC is a sponsor of the show.

The Art Shop artists will show us their dream stuff and Washington area artists will return the favor during a live webcam reception October 17, from 2-4 (EST) at the Capitol Skyline Hotel in SW DC's Skyline Lounge and Magnolia Room.

The dreamy art (live performance and prerecorded audio, video and still images) and everyone sipping cocktails, confabbing, and taking in the show (tell your cousin in Mannheim to show up and give you a shout out) will be broadcasted live (big enough screen!) during the reception. DJ CJ Weaver will spin dreamy ambient tunes!

Call to Artists - E-Mail Us Your Dreams!

We are seeking audio, video or still photography cell phone art that explores dreaming to project during the reception and send to The Art Shop to show at future dates.

You may send jpeg images and/or 15 – 60 second audio (mp3) or videoclips (mpeg) about dreams. This is a curated exhibition with no registration fee .

Ideally, your digital files should not exceed 5MB. If larger, please use yousendit.com.

Art Outlet / 3 More performers confirmed!
« on: September 04, 2009, 08:32:12 AM »
We are exited to bring you back silk trapeze artist Moira Lee. She is an incredible performer and showcased 2 years ago at the original Flux exhibition at the now legendary Danville Body Shop in Clarendon. Moira will perform 2 aerial dances during Ofrenda 2009.

You can find out more about Mora Lee at http://girlonsilk.com

Parliament Hill will enligthen us with their beautiful sounds. We first showcased Parliament Hill during Flux 2009 on Columbia Pike at Jazirock Studio and recently during The ZIP Code Show. We are exited that they will hit the stage for Ofrenda 2009.

Demivolt  hails from Washington, DC. Their music is described as  beautiful noise - worshipped by the few that matter, pop for the unpopular, gospel music for atheists. We are deligthed to have them included for the official ofrenda line-up!

More performers will be announced during the next upcoming weeks. stay tuned. Ofrenda is happening.

Art Outlet / Ofrenda - History
« on: August 19, 2009, 10:00:09 AM »
Ofrenda - Art for the Dead is an art exhibition of local artists' shrines, altars, paintings, photography, music, dancing, magic and spoken word based on the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) tradition.

Ofrenda remembers the dead and celebrates life (the two emphases of the holiday) with artist-made Dia de los Muertos altars and ofrendas (offerings) that venerate the beloved dead, and draw them to visit their loved ones, feast on their favorite food and drink, and listen to their favorite music.

It will either happen around the building, or if we get lucky and the city likes our ideas we are doing it down King Street. Rosemary Feit Covey and I are meeting next week with the city folks to discuss our options.

We will let you know, what happens. I would love to see skeleton cars, trumpets, fire jugglers and drummers walking down on King Street...  :smt118 And all culminating in a grandiose day of the dead art display with multiple bands and masks and puppets all around. Craziness!

artdc.org group shows / Re: 12x12 Artist Details.
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:36:44 PM »
Artist Name: Henrik Sundqvist
Title: Flores Muertas
Media: Soft & Hardground Etching
Chine-Collé (with Nepalese Khadi Himilayan Traditional Dyed 'Rust' paper) on Bhutanese Rural Tsarsho Paper
ed. 20
Dimensions: 8.5 x 8.5 inches
Price: $350.00 framed, $175.00 unframed
Date: 2008

Artist Statement:

The print series Flores Muertas depicts the issue of where our flowers come from, what kind of hidden costs and dangers lie behind them, and illustrates the conventional South American flower production as a real danger to people and the environment. Rose production plants in Ecuador and Columbia expose their workers to harmful pesticides and pollute and deplete nearby streams and ground water. Pollinators — most often bees, butterflies, birds, and bats—who transfer pollen from one flower to another and are critical to fruit and seed production have declined rapidly in numbers over the past several decades (National Research Counsel, 2006 as cited in the Washington Post http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/18/AR2006101801712.html).

Flores Muertas will educate the consumer on health hazards to the environment and flower workers caused by the conventional flower industry and provide an alternative solution, such as purchasing flowers from local stores which support US and internationally produced organic flowers. My hope is to raise awareness about conventional versus alternative flower production methods and to demonstrate, that the consumer has a choice.
