Arthur Miller's The Crucible, a classic of American theater, is a parable--and a warning--for all time.  The story is set in a 17th century Massachusetts town, where rigid Puritan ethics, as well as hypocrisy, ignorance and fear, fuel false accusations of witchcraft, and lead to chilling consequences.

Miller wrote The Crucible in the era of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti-communist Red Scare of the 1950's.  He intended the play to hold a mirror to the deliberate victimization and ruining of lives he saw happening around him.

These themes resound at a high decibel today.  This production's visual layers and surprises add new context to an enduring dramatic masterpiece.

Whitman Drama’s Noises Off Will Make You Laugh ’Til It Hurts

BETHESDA, MD – Walt Whitman High School’s acclaimed drama program takes on the ridiculous and side-splitting farce Noises Off Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 25-27, at 7 pm in the school’s Daryl L. Shaw auditorium, located at 7100 Whittier Boulevard, Bethesda.
In this show within a show, a bumbling cast, an exhausted crew, an offstage love triangle, and an excessive amount of sardines are the ingredients for disaster as a hapless troupe of actors attempts to perform the ill-fated play Nothing On. Doors are slammed, cues are missed, and romances go up in flames. As the sanity and patience of the cast and crew unravels, the show must go on—erupting in hilarious chaos.

Noises Off, written by Michael Frayn, is now playing a limited engagement on Broadway. Save yourself a trip to New York and catch Whitman Drama’s professional quality version of the comedy during its three nights in Bethesda. Whitman’s high-energy performance is directed by Christopher Gerken, a Tony nominee for excellence in theatre education.

Tickets are $10 for students/general admission, $15 for adults/general admission, and $20 for reserved seats. Available now online at whitmandrama.ticketleap.com and in person from the box office Feb. 23-24, 6:30-8 pm, and Feb. 25-27, 5:30-7 pm. Film, Theater, and Dance / Punk Twist on Sweeney Todd
« on: October 28, 2015, 08:31:26 PM »
This November, graffiti artists, punk rockers, and a lobotomy patient or two will scale a scaffold set to present Walt Whitman High School’s imaginative interpretation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The musical thriller runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, Nov. 19-21, at 7 pm in the school’s Daryl L. Shaw auditorium, located at 7100 Whittier Boulevard, Bethesda.

Director Christopher Gerken, a Tony nominee for excellence in theatre education, shifts the Sondheim musical from its traditional setting in Victorian England to the 1980s punk scene. The result is at once shocking and enchanting, as the bone-chilling classic score melds impeccably with the London punk/goth counterculture.

Tickets are $10 for students/general admission, $15 for adults/general admission, and $20 for reserved seats. Visit www.whitmandrama.com for more information.

The hit musical revue CLOSER THAN EVER is a heartwarming, tear-jerking exploration of timeless everyday struggles. CLOSER THAN EVER promises a clever juxtaposition of humor and sincerity that takes audiences not only into the songbook of Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire, but into the minds of a complex mix of very real characters. The revue is directed by Christopher Gerken, with musical and vocal direction by Jay Besch.

Walt Whitman High School’s award-winning drama program presents its genre-defying winter play, “Arcadia,” Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, February 26-28, at 7 pm in the school’s Daryl Shaw Auditorium (7100 Whittier Blvd.).

Widely considered to be one of the most influential pieces in contemporary theater, Tom Stoppard’s “Arcadia” explores the intertwined stories of two casts of characters from two different eras: a 19th century British family and the 20th century historians determined to discover their secrets. At once hilarious and heartbreaking, the show plays out against an unexpected mix of themes, including math, poetry, love, and extinction.

Reserved tickets are $20 each; unreserved seats run $15 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets are now available online at whitmandrama.ticketleap.com. Tickets will also be available in person from the box office Feb. 22-25, 6-8 pm, and on show nights beginning at 5:30 pm. Film, Theater, and Dance / LORD OF THE FLIES - Whitman Drama
« on: February 10, 2014, 09:15:23 AM »
Whitman Drama proudly presents LORD OF THE FLIES, their theater production of the acclaimed – and terrifying  - novel  by William Golding - -  with an all-male and an all-female cast.

Whitman’s production of LORD OF THE FLIES will be fusing the dynamic art forms text, drama, (fight) movement, acrobatics, dance and music while at the same time incorporating imaginative lighting, sound and multi-media effects.
Exploring traits like savage instinct, masculinity, rage and jealousy from both an all-male and an all-female cast, Whitman Drama will be putting on two different shows. Both boys and girls will use the same script and the same staging, but the actors’ delivery of the lines and the meaning behind the words, together with the simple fact that boys and girls do react different in any given situation, is going to be the biggest distinction. The girls will be fierce and terrifying. The boys will be more traditional but extremely intelligent. And nobody will be holding back…

On Thursday Feb 27th and Saturday March 1st an all-male cast will be on stage (7 pm) and on Friday Feb 28th ( 7pm) and Sunday March 2nd (2pm) an all-female cast will perform.

Performances will be at the Whitman auditorium located at 7100 Whittier Blvd. Bethesda, MD, 20817.

After a group of schoolchildren survive a massive plane crash, what starts as a classic desert island adventure with fun and games, quickly becomes a struggle for survival that sees the teens descend into tribalism and bloodthirsty barbarity in a nightmarish world…. Two opposing tribes: one that strives for civility and another that delights in savage violence. The competition escalates into a dangerous, frightening climax, as this thrilling classic looks into the darker parts of human nature.
Adapted for the stage by Nigel Williams, Nobel Prize Winner William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES, is one of the most celebrated novels of modern times. LORD OF THE FLIES IS a shocking dramatization of the good and evil within us all.

Advised: 13+ for violence and language.
