Film..
« on: May 26, 2011, 08:53:28 AM »
I stopped by the photo store and bought some film.  Was glad to it was still available.  I shot a roll with my f100.  I still think it has a greater feel than my D90.

I miss film too.  i was JUST thinking about how I want to pick up my old SLRs again sometimes.  Although I do shoot film in my holga, and just bought a superheadz ultra wide black slim devil to shoot some 35mm lomo redscale xr film in. can't wait to see how it turns out!

cheers, darlin

Welcome to my world.  :)  Nice to hear you shot a roll of film--it's still great, and available at finer photographic establishments (almost) everywhere.

Wow--what a great time you're going to have.  And I don't say that because I grew up there.  :)  It's a great city.  Don't miss the lakefront, the art institute, a Chicago hotdog, and a few of the great neighborhoods and restaurants.  Go up in the John Hancock Center or the Willis Tower sky ledge for a good look at the city.

Here are some of my film shots from Chicago.  These were shot on Lomo's Redscale XR 35mm film using a Superheadz super wide angle camera.  i'm thinking i like the look of this new toy :)

Nice shots--I like the effect of the film with the wide lens.  Very atmospheric stuff.    You may want to use some fine sandpaper to remove whatever is scratching your film, though.  I assume there's a little sharp bit of plastic that's dragging across the emulsion.

FYI, for those of you keeping score--the Redscale film replicates the effect of taking a roll of color film and winding it onto the spool backwards, so you're shooting through the anti-halation layer.  So the film is wound onto the spools backwards and the anti-halation dye acts like a filter.  Normally, the anti-halation layer stops the bright areas from bleeding into the adjacent dark areas of the image.  Whew.

Thanks Barry. Yea the redscale def has an interesting effect!

Yea I was wondering about those scratches.  On some of my latest holga scans there was a scratch on my scans as well, but they didn't appear to be on the neg, so I think it was the lab's scanner. Not sure if this is the case with these or not too, I will have to double check the film and camera and see what's going on.

Sure.  With out getting on my soap box and the love for processing your own work, I would have said Black and White Custom Lab, but they closed their doors in 2008, a very sad note.  So then there is Dodge.  or more apt, Dodge Chrome, they merged, www.dodgechrome.com , or pen camera.

But seriously, buy a tank, some chemicals, and process your own negatives.  Follow a few rules, and it's not that complicated.   Things to worry about, timing, and the appropriate chemistry for the film stock that you are using, then spend a few bucks and get a good Nikon Cool Scan.  You'll save a lot of bread in the long run.

We have some film gurus on this website that I'm sure could offer more advise...
